This summer's Tokyo Olympics fell victim to the coronavirus crisis Tuesday as the death toll mounted rapidly in Europe and the United States.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and IOC President Thomas Bach agreed over the phone that the games could not go ahead as scheduled because of the coronavirus pandemic, Tokyo 2020 President Yoshiro Mori told journalists at a briefing in Tokyo.
According to Mori, Japan's Olympics Minister Seiko Hashimoto, Tokyo 2020 CEO Toshiro Muto and Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike also attended the conference call and agreed that "it is not possible to hold the Games in July as planned, neither within this year".
