The President of Portugal his voice to a national outcry on Monday over racist abuse aimed at Porto player Moussa Marega, who walked off the field after hearing monkey chants in Sunday's win over Guimaraes.

President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa condemned all forms of racism, saying: "Us, the Portuguese, we are what we are because we are the result of many cultures. there are no pure Portuguese, none."

Marega, a striker from Mali, was visibly angered by monkey noises that were heard after he scored Porto's second goal in a 2-1 win.

Several Porto and opposition players attempted to dissuade Marega from walking off the field in the 71st minute, when he demanded to be substituted.
