Our panel of journalists discuss the big topics of the week, starting with France, which has endured a lot since 2013 but a rampage inside Paris police headquarters by one of its own staff members is a first. The attack came one day after France's biggest march by police in nearly two decades. Overworked, under stress, they sounded the alarm over the 52 officers who have committed suicide since the start of the year.
In the United States, Donald Trump's envoy to Ukraine was on Capitol Hill on Thursday. Veteran diplomat Kurt Volker resigned last week after revelations that he had put Trump's personal lawyer Rudolph Giuliani in touch with relevant Ukrainian officials.Tuesday saw a 70th anniversary birthday bash for the People's Republic that was months in the making: complete with new military hardware, 15,000 goose-stepping troops and 100,000 civilian participants. A further cementing of Xi Jinping's grip on power. And the European Union is studying Boris Johnson's eleventh-hour proposal to solve the Irish backstop issue.
