Pro-China forces have resorted to cyber-attacks in their efforts to thwart democracy and free speech in Hong Kong. On Wednesday, hackers launched denial-of-service attacks against websites operated by the Apple Daily, which supports universal suffrage. This follows an attack on a website that is conducting a non-binding poll on democratic reforms.

The Basic Law in Hong Kong promises voters the right to choose their leader via universal suffrage. But China wants to limit this right by deciding who may run in elections. Meaning only the 'loyal' can run for office. Many Hong Kongers see this as a sham democracy. The right to nominate candidates should rest with the people.

Pro-democracy advocates are gearing up for peaceful protests aimed at drawing attention to the issue. Perhaps this is why anti-democratic forces are ratcheting up the pressure.
