same petrified look on the face of the worthless piece of shit who was pushed down to his knees by my men. James Marcello, a caporegime of my family. Just temporarily, though. He won't be alive to claim that title by the end of this hour.
I cock my head to a side and scrutinize him with narrowed eyes. As expected, he whimpers and looks away.
What a pussy!
"P-Please, boss... l-let me go! I-I have a family. My... my kids are still so young and I... I'm the only breadwinner. M-My wife-"
"Same old story," I say, cutting off his rant. "Why don't you tell us something new, James?"
I twirl a gun in my hand and study him, amused as he averts his eyes, looking at everyone but my towering form. I lean against my desk and without moving my eyes from him, I say, "Portatela qui."
(Bring her here.)
James' terrified eyes meet mine, and I grin. He doesn't speak Italian but, having worked for me for seven years, has picked on enough words to understand what I just said.
"N-No."
"Y-Yes," I say, mocking him and everyone chuckles.
Tears roll down his face and he shakes his head vigorously as if doing that will change his fate. A throaty laugh escapes my lips and before he can blink, my foot collides with his jaw. His body tumbles across the floor, blood gushing out of his mouth. The room falls silent and his body shakes with fear.
"Let go of me! Where are you taking me? I swear if-"
I glare at the woman, Rose, who is getting dragged into the room by my men. Her thrashing and screaming stop the moment her eyes fall on me and her jaw drops to the ground.
"Cat got your tongue?"
"M-Mr. Castellano."
Her voice is so low that if it wasn't for the silence in my office, I wouldn't have heard her. I move my eyes from her to James. When she follows my gaze, she lets out an ear-piercing scream. I wince and watch her struggle against the hold of my men again.
Damn this woman and her high pitch!
James still curled on the floor, curses and threatens my men to let his wife go. He tries to get up but gets kicked down by the men standing behind him. The couple scream, fight and plead. I clench my hands into tight fists and look down between my shoes. "ENOUGH!"
My voice booms throughout the room and everyone stiffens. The silence that follows is suffocating and overpowering. Good.
"Let her go."
My men do as I say. Rose stumbles on her footing and her terrified eyes meet my cold ones. She doesn't back down, though. Unlike her husband, she holds my gaze. A smirk forms on my face behind my mask.
Let's see how long she can keep up her bold act.
I raise my gun and without looking away from her, shoot James in his shoulder. A scream full of agony and pain cuts through the silence. James' scream is shortly followed by his wife's. She looks at his grunting and bloody body with a dreaded expression and whimpers.
