New York City's Styrofoam Ban Is Now in Effect The material was originally meant to start being prohibited at
the beginning of 2019. But establishments were given the first half of this year to prepare. Those who violate the ban will be fined $250 and a second penalty
is worth double that of $500. Due to it not being biodegradable, styrofoam is considered to be a menace to the environment. It also consumes toxins very quickly and is a chore to cleanup because of being easily breakable. NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio, via statement NYC is now the
biggest American city
to prohibit styrofoam. It is also prohibited in other
major U.S. areas like
Seattle and San Diego.
