ABOUT THE BOOK:
Karamba (the title character), a long-distance truck driver, AIDS patient, and health education advocate, teams up with his friend and physician, Dr. Cinzano, to educate the largely ignorant populace via the media about AIDS. Unfortunately, the media itself was not only ignorant of the issues involved in AIDS, but was only looking for an opportunity to feather its nest, exploit Karamba, and sensationalize his predicament for mercenary purposes. The government encourages it, seeing that the media stance covers up its ineptitude and corruption, even as top government officials divert funds provided by international donor agencies into their own pockets.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
The author, Olukayode Kehinde Oyenekan (O.K. Oyenekan), was a trained journalist who worked in some newspapers in Nigeria early in his career as a reporter covering different beats. He was trained at the Nigerian institute of Journalism in Lagos, and later studied at the University of Ibadan where he got a degree in English Studies in 1983. He later had a fortuitous career switch to work in an international Non-Governmental and Development Organization (NGDO) in Nigeria, The Carter Center, with head office in Atlanta, and this is where he has been working for over 20 years in a program support capacity. I have had the opportunity of seeing a completely different vista of life during my work as the organization I work for is involved in various public health eradication, elimination, control and training programs, working in collaboration with governments at various levels- federal, state and local governments mostly in very rural communities.
