The opposition Pheu Thai Party has won the most seats in Thailand's first election since a military coup in 2014, according to the official results from the Thai election commission.
The pro-democracy party, backed by ousted former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, took 136 seats while the ruling pro-military Palan Pracha Rath Party won 115.
But Pheu Tahi will need to form political allies with other parties because it fell short of the 250 seats needed for a majority in the lower house.
Thailand has been through political turmoil from a battle between supporters of the military and the former Prime Minister.
A vote for the next prime minister is expected to happen within a few weeks.
