This Chinese ‘Beatboxer’ Can Make Any Sound With His Mouth

Haiyang is a master of kouji, a traditional Chinese art form similar to beatboxing. The techniques have their roots in bird calling, but nowadays, Haiyang can perform all sorts of modern sounds, including cars, planes, and explosions. He’s in such high demand that he even performed for Ivanka Trump at an embassy event and did the sound effects for the action scenes in “Wolf Warrior 2,” the highest-grossing Chinese movie ever.

00:24Haiyang is a master of kouji,
00:26a vocal technique similar to beatboxing.
00:28It’s an ancient art that dates back thousands of years
00:32to when people first learned how to imitate
00:34birds and other animals.
00:36But nowadays, Haiyang can perform all sorts of modern sounds
00:39like cars, planes, and explosions,
00:42using techniques that have been refined over centuries.
00:54There’s a saying that a true kouji master can sound so realistic
00:57that if you close your eyes,
00:59you can’t tell the difference between the imitation
01:01and the real thing.
01:06One of the earliest records of Chinese sound mimicry
01:09is the story of Mengchang.
01:12He was a high-ranking minister in 300 BC,
01:14when China was just a bunch of kingdoms at war with each other.
01:19Mengchang was from the kingdom of Qi,
01:21but the king of Qin wanted to make him a minister,
01:24so Mengchang traveled to Qin.
01:27The king's advisers, though, were suspicious
01:29that Mengchang was still loyal to Qi,
01:31so the king placed him under house arrest.
01:35To help him escape,
01:36Mengchang’s loyal servant,
01:38a seasoned kouji practitioner,
01:40mimicked the sound of dogs barking
01:42to lure away the guards.
01:56Haiyang only started formally studying kouji in 2011,
02:01but he’s been mimicking animals since he was young.
02:31When he was 14, he saw kouji master Luosang
02:35mimicking a trumpet on television.
02:49That’s when he decided to pursue kouji.
03:51Haiyang is now renowned in the field,
03:53even once performing for Ivanka Trump
03:55 at a Chinese Embassy event.
03:58He’s also in high demand by the film industry.
04:00In 2017,
04:02he was invited to make the sound effects for “Wolf Warrior 2,”
04:05the highest-grossing Chinese movie ever.
04:30Despite the prestige,
04:31there are very few kouji masters like Haiyang left.
05:10I can't do it.
05:12Hey guys, this is Nic.
05:14I shot the video that you just...
05:16One more, one more.
05:16Do I need to do the horse again?
05:19It was really fun shooting with Haiyang in Beijing.
05:22The way he mimics a horse really blew my mind.
05:25And also the baby's mind.
