It's time now for an in-depth look at stocks and the economy. And for that we're joined by Dr. Yang Junseok, professor of economics at the Catholic University of Korea.
Dr. Yang, thanks for coming on today.
You're welcome.
The U.S. recently changed course on interest rates because of concerns over a recession. Stocks in the U.S. on Tuesday were mixed, but the S&P rising to another new high. What's behind the rally there and is there momentum to keep it going?
Here in Korea, we had GDP growth in the first quarter in negative territory. But then yesterday, we see industrial production and investment both up. Is that a sign the GDP situation is heading for a turnaround?
The Japanese stock markets have been closed for some time because of Golden Week. But they crowned a new emperor today, so let's look at Japan for a minute. Its economy stagnated to large degree under the previous emperor. In the new Heisei era, though, do you see things going differently for Japan economically, or perhaps in its relations with Korea?
Now, this week we have the Federal Reserve Open Markets Commitee. The U.S. sanctions on Iran, banning their oil, will also take effect, and that affects Korea. Do you see that having any more influence on stocks or is it priced in?
Alright, Dr. Yang. That's where we'll have to leave it today.
Thanks so much for your insights.
