Ta’zieh, the Passion Play in Practice

As a form of Iranian passion play, Ta’zieh is the embodiment of theater, music and lyrics meant to lament the martyrdom of Imam Hussein in the Battle of Karbala. The centuries-long art is now being preserved by some in Iran. One of the most dedicated of Ta’zieh performers is Mohammad Taqi Sadeh, who is living in the Iranian city of Qom. Moahmmad Taqi discusses the challenges of the art, the spiritual rewards and what makes it a unique performance, something beyond payment, something which he believes should not be reduced to business and must be genuinely transmitted to future generations.
