Over the years, rat, just like its rodent brother, mouse, plays a key role in many experimental studies. Together with mice and guinea pigs, rats belong to the largest and most diversified order of mammals, the Rodentia. Since 18th century, the first time domestic albino brown rats were used for purely scientific purposes, a great deal of advanced understanding associate with genetics, therapeutics, pathology and other topics, that have provided a great benefit for the health and well-being of humankind, must be owed to the sacrifice of countless laboratory rats. Currently, rat is the second most frequently used experimental animal host, after the mouse, for the monoclonal antibody production. Same as human and mouse, rat has five antibody isotypes (IgA, IgD, IgE, IgG and IgM). Furthermore, the canonical protein sequence comparison between cognate mouse and rat shows a high similarity between their immunoglobulin constant regions.
