Paul Ryan Tweets About Someone's $1.50 Bump After GOP Tax Overhaul

House Speaker Paul Ryan's tweet touting someone's $1.50 pay bump received numerous negative reactions.

Since the passing of the GOP tax bill in December, Republican leaders have repeatedly touted the financial benefits most Americans will receive as a result of the new tax law.
House Speaker Paul Ryan echoed that message in a tweet on Saturday, but he faced numerous negative reactions after citing a $1.50 pay bump as an example of tax relief.
"A secretary at a public high school in Lancaster, PA, said she was pleasantly surprised her pay went up $1.50 a week…she said [that] will more than cover her Costco membership for the year," Ryan wrote on Twitter, while including a link to an Associated Press report on paychecks reflecting lower taxes.
Ryan deleted the tweet shortly after posting it, but not before it was widely circulated.
"$1.50 would buy a steak dinner --- in 1894. About the time to which Republicans want to turn back the clock. Republicans are afraid of the future," wrote one Twitter user.
"I don't know that this is something to tout. A check for $1,000 is a big deal for many people...I understand why elected officials promote that.  But $1.50 a week shouldn't be put up as an example," someone else tweeted.
"Now she can afford a Costco membership, but she can't afford to shop there. Got it," wrote another tweeter.
Ryan's tweet came days after House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi's "crumbs" comment in reference to tax cuts.
"In terms of the bonus that corporate America receives versus the crumbs they are giving to workers to put the schmooze on is so pathetic," Pelosi told reporters in January. "It's so pathetic."
