The seeds of Static Momentum were planted in May 2015 when guitarist Tom Rehnberg and singer Kurt C.L. started writing songs together in Kurt’s West Palm Beach apartment. Seven months and an album and a half’s worth of songs later, Tom and Kurt decided to fill out the rest of the band’s lineup and take the music to the stage.
Drummer Cory Dorman joined the band in March 2016 and was followed by bassist and keyboardist Rob Busler. After making some appearances on the open mic circuit, Static Momentum played their first official show on August 6, 2016. Since then, the band has been playing in venues all throughout South Florida.
The band took their next big step in January 2017 when they began recording their self-titled debut EP at Iceman Studios in Royal Palm Beach, Florida. Produced and engineered by Daniel Colombo, the EP features five songs written at various points in the band’s short but busy history. The EP was released digitally in May 2017, and the band has already made arrangements to record a follow up LP in the summer of 2017.
Listeners always note a blend of different styles when describing Static Momentum’s music, making such comparisons as “Pearl Jam mixed with Interpol,” or “if Jello Biafra [Dead Kennedys] fronted The Killers.” The band refers to their sound as a “Celebration of Music,” as each of its four members brings his own set of personal influences to the songwriting table with the goal of creating an original sound that is greater than the sum of its parts. The influences span all across the alternative and rock music spectrum from the goth and new wave bands of the 80’s to the indie artists of today.
