We have talked about freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke breakouts. Now we will talk about the butterfly break out. In order to do a successful butterfly breakout you must do it fluidly. You need to keep the momentum of the push and underwater kicks to do a seamless transition to your stroke. There is one advantage of the butterfly breakout that the other strokes don’t have. Your legs will continue doing the same movement. You just simply keep doing dolphin kicks throughout the whole transition from underwater kicks to butterfly stroke.

This is easier said than done. Because you are doing a big effort on the underwater kicks, it can be challenging to start your stroke without changing the tempo of your kicks. Your first stroke needs to be strong. Preferably you won’t breathe on the first one, so you can pull your body forward instead of up. You don’t want to pull yourself upwards because it messes everything up. Look at how high my body went here. Because of that my legs had to wait for my head to come down, so my hips sank and I was dragging a lot of water.

The first stroke starts when the feet are going up. This is when you separate your streamline by pulling your hands apart a few inches. Now that you are in a good position tu pull, your legs start going down and you start pulling with your arms. The next downward kick comes when the arms are breaking the surface of the water. If you do this correctly you will set yourself up for a nice butterfly swim.

If you have trouble with your underwater kicks and you want to understand them better make sure to watch this video.
