Tesla takes new direction with solar roof panel line

Early Wednesday, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that solar roof tiles will be shipped to customers this year.
The company will work withPanasonic to manufacture the tiles, and production will start in Fremont, Californiain the second quarter.
Like solar paneling, thetiles will convert sunlight to electricity, giving customers durability and utility bill savings.
Back in November, Musk told investors"The base of the proposition would be, would you like a roof that looks better than the normal roof, lasts twice as long, costs less, and by the way, generateselectricity?"
Musk added that the product would also pair well with Tesla's home-energy storage battery pack, which provides backup power through solar energy.
