A woman who served under former President Obama has said that he is “probably still the leader of the Democratic Party.”
Alyssa Mastromonaco, who worked as his White House deputy chief of staff for operations for three years starting in 2011, made the comment during an interview on CNN Friday.
When host Erin Burnett asked if Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders is the current leader of the Democratic Party, she responded by saying, “I think if you ask Bernie, he would say ‘no.’  I think he even said he wasn’t a Democrat the other day.”
Mastromonaco added, “I think Barack Obama is probably still the leader of the Democratic Party, even though he is...on hiatus right now."
The former staffer, who is currently an executive at Vice Media, had told Burnett earlier in the interview that Obama is “living his best life.”
Mastromonaco then said about him and former first lady Michelle Obama, “He’ll be back but if there was anyone who deserved a vacation, it was those two.”
In fact, the Chicago Tribune is reporting that Obama plans to attend “his first public event since leaving the White House.” The engagement is scheduled for Monday at the University of Chicago where he will speak to area students about community involvement and organizing.
The former president's office issued a statement, noting in part, “This event is part of President Obama’s post-presidency goal to encourage and support the next generation of leaders driven by strengthening communities around the country and the world."
