00:01:25Can I come in now?
00:01:27No.
00:01:30Well, I believe that's everything.
00:01:33I hope so.
00:01:34Yes, it's a lengthy business. You must be tired.
00:01:37I'm so excited. I wish we could take the youngster right home with us.
00:01:41When do you think we can expect to get him?
00:01:43Oh, well, it...
00:01:44Oh, just a minute. I'm afraid I forgot something.
00:01:47I have to sign these.
00:01:49These give admission to check into every detail of your private life.
00:02:10Well, that does it, I think.
00:02:12I'm sorry to have kept you so long,
00:02:14but you understand that we must be most careful.
00:02:17After all, it's a child's life. Our investigation can't be too thorough.
00:02:21How long will it be?
00:02:22Well, it all depends. Matter of months, perhaps.
00:02:24But we'll keep you posted.
00:02:25Thank you very much. Eve dear will be late.
00:02:27Goodbye, and please hurry.
00:02:29Goodbye.
00:02:30Goodbye.
00:02:53Now, can I come in?
00:02:55Oh, yes.
00:02:58Interview report to the directors.
00:03:00Names of applicants, Harry and Eve Grayle.
00:03:03She is 32, he's 38.
00:03:06Occupation, travelling salesman for the Sutter Sales Corporation,
00:03:11dealing in electrical appliances.
00:03:13The company is located in the city of London.
00:03:16Occupation, travelling salesman for the Sutter Sales Corporation,
00:03:20dealing in electrical appliances.
00:03:23The company is owned by the Grahams
00:03:25and was started about four years ago.
00:03:29Mrs. Graham appears to be very capable.
00:03:31She handles the office work.
00:03:33Mr. Graham covers the Los Angeles area
00:03:37where they hold a sales franchise for a deep freeze concern.
00:03:42Presently about 20,000.
00:03:45Married, eight years.
00:03:48You don't need to wait for me. I'll straighten up.
00:03:52Yeah, I tried that once before and nearly lost my job.
00:03:55You and your cleaning up.
00:03:58Well, go on, go on. You're not disturbing me one bit.
00:04:03Mrs. Graham is unable to have a family.
00:04:06Her problem is of undetermined origin.
00:04:08But we'll check several physicians
00:04:10who have examined her during the past eight years.
00:04:14They will take an older child, four or five years of either sex.
00:04:19From the preliminary interview,
00:04:21it's my opinion they would make fit parents,
00:04:24but something bothers me about Mr. Graham.
00:04:27He seemed impatient during the interview.
00:04:30A chip on the shoulder sort of attitude.
00:04:33He behaved rather strangely
00:04:35when signing the permission to investigate form.
00:04:40Perhaps this is my imagination.
00:04:42I'll report further when I visit the Graham's home
00:04:44for the customary inspection next week.
00:04:49Well, that's that.
00:04:50If all the others was like you,
00:04:52there wouldn't be any babies given away in this state at all.
00:04:55Why are you such an old fussbudget, huh?
00:04:58If you had made a mistake once,
00:05:01you wouldn't want to ever let it happen again.
00:05:05Not where a child is involved.
00:05:09Now...
00:05:11Well...
00:05:12Goodbye, dearie.
00:05:17Eve...
00:05:19Graham.
00:05:21Into such a street...
00:05:25Harry Graham.
00:05:35Harry Graham.
00:05:55Hey.
00:05:57What goes on?
00:05:58Oh, I couldn't resist him.
00:05:59He's the beginning of a collection.
00:06:00There's a whole army that goes with him.
00:06:02We haven't heard anything yet.
00:06:04We will, you'll see.
00:06:05Mr. Jordan looks like Santa Claus.
00:06:07Just like a man who gives babies away.
00:06:10In any way, it's good practice for you,
00:06:11being awakened by mechanical toys
00:06:13on a teddy bear in the face,
00:06:15maybe later on a football in the tummy.
00:06:17Oh, you'll learn to love it.
00:06:21You will love it, won't you?
00:06:23Of course I will.
00:06:25Why do you ask?
00:06:26Oh, then it's just my imagination.
00:06:29The other day in Mr. Jordan's office,
00:06:31I thought maybe you were sorry we'd started the whole thing.
00:06:33I wasn't sorry.
00:06:34It's just that Santa Claus was such a deliberate old congee,
00:06:37he got on my nerves, that's all.
00:06:39How about undoing my blouse?
00:06:41How about getting yourself pulled together?
00:06:43This is Tom Morgan Saturday with us.
00:06:45You can do the Caesar salad.
00:06:46What else is cooking?
00:06:47Oh, everything you hate.
00:06:49Roast beef rare, potatoes brown.
00:06:51How does that sound, master?
00:06:53Sounds like the perfect wife.
00:06:55Good in the office, great around the house.
00:06:58I wonder if it will like him.
00:07:00Well, if it doesn't, I'll keep it myself.
00:07:12I remember other Saturday afternoons,
00:07:14when it was always like this.
00:07:18Long time ago.
00:07:34You know, this really is a beautifully planned apartment.
00:07:37Yes, we think so.
00:07:41Oh, immaculate.
00:07:43You sure you won't have something? A Coke?
00:07:45Could I have a glass of milk instead?
00:07:47Yes, surely, sir.
00:07:49My stomach, my work, all the tension.
00:07:52If you don't mind my saying so, Mr. Jordan,
00:07:55I think you take your work much too seriously.
00:07:57It's not worth it.
00:07:58I think it is.
00:08:01By the way, we've begun our investigation on you.
00:08:05Oh?
00:08:07How's it look?
00:08:08Everybody speaks very highly of you.
00:08:11But?
00:08:14I've been a salesman too long
00:08:16not to recognize sales resistance when I see it, Mr. Jordan.
00:08:19I have a feeling you don't want us to have the child.
00:08:23I wouldn't say that.
00:08:29Well?
00:08:31Am I right?
00:08:32I don't know whether I do or not.
00:08:34At least not yet.
00:08:36I understand you spend a great deal of time in Los Angeles.
00:08:39On business.
00:08:40Yes, that's right.
00:08:41Then perhaps you could give me the names
00:08:43of some of the people down there with whom you work.
00:08:46Oh, it's all routine, nothing more than that.
00:08:48You're very conscientious, aren't you, Mr. Jordan?
00:08:50Well, I'll drop you a line
00:08:51and refer you to lots of people in Los Angeles.
00:08:54There's something else about me I think you should know.
00:08:56I have a small mole on my right shoulder.
00:08:58Would you like to see it?
00:09:00Oh, Mr. Jordan, I'm sorry I'm late.
00:09:02That's all right, I was early.
00:09:03What are you two doing in the kitchen?
00:09:05Mr. Jordan's been looking us over.
00:09:06I've seen your home.
00:09:08It's pleasant, very pleasant indeed.
00:09:10Won't you stay for dinner?
00:09:11Oh, thanks, I can't.
00:09:12I have to get back to the office.
00:09:13Lots more paperwork to do there.
00:09:15I'll see you to the door.
00:09:16Oh, thank you.
00:09:17Goodbye, Mr. Ray.
00:09:18Thank you, Mrs. Graham.
00:09:26Goodbye.
00:09:43What happened between you two?
00:09:44Oh, I'm sorry, Eve.
00:09:45I don't know what hit me.
00:09:46Sorry?
00:09:47He said he liked you, but didn't think you liked him.
00:09:49Oh?
00:09:50Anything else?
00:09:51That we could start fixing up that room
00:09:53and he thought I'd be a good mother.
00:09:55Mr. Jordan is right.
00:09:56Well, the star salesman of the Sutter Corporation
00:09:58had better get on his horse.
00:09:59What time's your plane?
00:10:009.15.
00:10:01I've got a date with the Clark Company
00:10:02by first thing in the morning.
00:10:03If we can only sell that account.
00:10:05By the time you're a father,
00:10:06just think you can hire one salesman
00:10:08or even two the way things are going
00:10:09and you can stay home and run the show.
00:10:12What's this?
00:10:13Are you resigning?
00:10:14Not exactly.
00:10:15I'll be around a heck of a bit.
00:10:16That's a woman's privilege.
00:10:17Well, I've got to pack.
00:10:18Oh, I'll do it for you,
00:10:19but there's not much to pack.
00:10:20Everything's in Los Angeles.
00:10:21Don't you ever get a hole in your sock?
00:10:23And how do the buttons manage to stay on your shirts?
00:10:26You never bring them home.
00:10:27I've found a laundry that does it.
00:10:29Saves a lot of trouble.
00:10:30I'll only be a minute packing your bag.
00:10:54Oh, yes.
00:10:56I know Harry Graham very well.
00:10:58Like him.
00:10:59He handled our product for several years until...
00:11:02Until what?
00:11:03We didn't fire him,
00:11:04if that's what you're getting at.
00:11:06He fired us.
00:11:07Got a better deal.
00:11:09I see.
00:11:10I'd give my shirt to get Graham back,
00:11:12and you can tell him I said so.
00:11:15Well, I've got to go.
00:11:16I've got a date with the Clark Company
00:11:17by first thing in the morning.
00:11:18If we can only sell that account.
00:11:20By first thing in the morning.
00:11:21By first thing in the morning.
00:11:28Thank you very much.
00:11:42You see, the Grahams wish to adopt a child,
00:11:44and we must have certain information.
00:11:46Well, isn't that nice?
00:11:48They want to adopt a baby.
00:11:50How long has Mr. Graham made his office here?
00:11:53Oh, I guess about two years.
00:11:55Where does he live when he's in Los Angeles?
00:11:58I guess he just lives around.
00:12:00Hotels, motels, wherever he can get in.
00:12:02It's cocktail time, honey.
00:12:04Are you with me?
00:12:05Mr. Jordan, this is Roy Esterly.
00:12:08Oh, I'm very pleased to meet you.
00:12:10What line are you in?
00:12:11Mr. Jordan is getting some information on Harry Graham.
00:12:14Oh, Harry's not in any trouble.
00:12:16Mr. Jordan's not a cop.
00:12:17I'll tell you later.
00:12:19Okay, sweetie.
00:12:20You fill him in on Mr. Exclusive,
00:12:22and when you get through, come on back
00:12:24and have a little chat with me, huh?
00:12:26Excuse me, but could I ask you a few questions?
00:12:29Why, sure, sure.
00:12:30Fire away.
00:12:31What do you know of Mr. Graham?
00:12:34Oh, he's a good guy.
00:12:36But you called him Mr. Exclusive.
00:12:39Oh, I was kind of kidding, I guess.
00:12:41See, we never see him except here in the office,
00:12:43and of course, when he's here, he's buried in work.
00:12:45You know, I can't understand how a guy can live
00:12:48such a little social life.
00:12:50So he's not a playboy,
00:12:52like some cornballs I could mention.
00:12:54Playboy?
00:12:55He's the original invisible man.
00:12:57You never see him anywhere.
00:12:59He's not at the hotels, restaurants, nightclubs.
00:13:02Man comes to town, and just like that, he disappears.
00:13:05Mr. Jordan, I have an idea.
00:13:08I'm sure Harry will be calling in.
00:13:09You can get everything you want right from him.
00:13:11I'll call the hotels for you.
00:13:13Why don't you just sit over there at Harry's desk?
00:13:16Thank you, miss.
00:13:17Maybe I should see Mr. Graham after all.
00:13:20Yes, I'll wait.
00:13:22Oh, as long as you're going to all the trouble,
00:13:25would you kindly ask the hotel people
00:13:27when Mr. Graham was last registered?
00:13:30Surely, I could do that.
00:13:32Say, Mr. Jordan,
00:13:34your throat must get pretty dry asking all those questions.
00:13:36How about a little slug?
00:13:38Oh, you're very kind of you, but...
00:13:42No, thanks.
00:13:44Bob Vance never called, did he?
00:13:45No.
00:13:46That's good, because I don't want to talk to him.
00:13:51Hello?
00:13:52No, he's in Redlands.
00:13:54He'll be back the day after tomorrow.
00:13:56Yes, I'll have him call you.
00:14:07Harrison Graham?
00:14:11Harry Gra...
00:14:14Harrison Graham.
00:14:16Good night.
00:14:22You've really got Harry Graham on your mind.
00:14:25I'm sorry I took so long, but the hotel's had a check.
00:14:29You know, it's funny, but he hasn't registered any of them for months.
00:14:33Several of them remember him.
00:14:35Of course, he could be staying at a rooming house,
00:14:37but that doesn't sound like him.
00:14:39He likes everything nice.
00:14:40You're very kind.
00:14:42Sorry for all the trouble.
00:14:45By the way, is Mr. Graham known by any other name than Harry?
00:14:49No, his name is Harry.
00:14:52Look, Mr. Jordan, he was in yesterday,
00:14:55and I know I'll be hearing from him soon.
00:14:57Give me a number, and I'll have him call you.
00:14:59Or maybe you've gotten everything you need, huh?
00:15:01No, not yet.
00:15:05Excuse me, it's that board.
00:15:07Oh, thank you.
00:15:12Graham. Harrison.
00:15:15Harrison Graham.
00:15:17One, three, two, print.
00:15:36Wait for me, please.
00:15:42Come on.
00:15:58Good evening.
00:15:59Hello.
00:16:01Aren't you a little off your beat?
00:16:03Well, I was coming to Los Angeles anyway for a meeting tomorrow.
00:16:06I'm reading a paper at a welfare convention.
00:16:08Nice.
00:16:09Well, I'm the boss here.
00:16:10I've been doing a little checking up on you.
00:16:12Tell me, why are you listed in the telephone book under Harrison Graham?
00:16:18Harrison Graham's my real name.
00:16:20Oh, you changed it?
00:16:22Some time ago.
00:16:23I thought it sounded a little formal, if you know what I mean.
00:16:26Yeah, but in San Francisco, you're listed as Harry.
00:16:29The phone company got it mixed up.
00:16:31Look, I'm dead on my feet.
00:16:33I just got home from work a couple of hours ago.
00:16:35Suppose we meet for lunch tomorrow.
00:16:37Maybe we can learn to get along.
00:16:39Well, I'm busy tomorrow, but I'm sorry I bothered you.
00:16:43But after all, it is my job.
00:16:45I understand.
00:16:46Good night.
00:16:47Good night.

00:18:12It's all right.
00:18:27Hey, I'm off.
00:18:28Tell him to go.
00:18:29He'll wake them both up.

00:19:28I don't know.
00:19:30I don't know.
00:19:31What?
00:19:32I.
00:19:33I.
00:19:34I.
00:19:35I don't know.
00:19:36I.
00:19:37I don't know.
00:19:38I.
00:19:39I.
00:19:40I.
00:19:41I don't know.
00:19:42I don't know.
00:19:43I don't know.
00:19:44I don't know.
00:19:45How could a man like yourself, successful, admired, get into a position as vile as this?
00:19:46How?
00:19:47I don't know.
00:19:48I don't know how.
00:19:50I don't know how.
00:19:53Loneliness, I guess?
00:19:55Have you ever spent half your life living in hotel rooms, eating in restaurants with only a newspaper for company, walking the streets, looking for a movie you haven't seen?
00:20:07Well, that's the way it was one Sunday afternoon when I was stuck in Los Angeles. Couldn't get home to spend the weekend with Eve.
00:20:18I called her, but we didn't talk about us. She was in one of her executive moves, a career woman. You've never seen her that way. She's different now.
00:20:30Anyway, when I got off the phone, I was twice as lonely. I felt as if the walls of the hotel room were closing in on me.
00:20:39So I decided to go out for a walk. Some men on the road escaped their loneliness with women who were easy to get, but that didn't work with me.
00:20:52In all the years of my marriage, I never looked at another woman. Eve was my whole life. Yet, sometimes in those years, I felt a distance between us which was more than miles.
00:21:07When we found out we couldn't have children, Eve was bitter and restless. It was my idea of coming into the business. She caught on fast. So fast, she doubled our sales in no time.
00:21:24And our marriage, well, it became a business partnership. So on that particular Sunday, my aloneness was like a pain.
00:21:37Visit that fabulous Beverly Hills. It's only $3.25, including tax, and will give you something to talk about when you get back to your hometown.
00:21:45Hey, folks, the jury's just about ready to leave. See the homes of all of Hollywood's greatest movie stars. Visit that fabulous Beverly Hills. It's only $3.25, including tax, and will give you something to talk about when you get back to your hometown.
00:22:02I liked movies, though I really didn't care where Clark Gable lived. But here were people going someplace, and I went along with them.
00:22:10Ladies and gentlemen, this is glamorous Beverly Hills. Here are the most beautiful homes in the world, where your favorite stars of screen live and play.
00:22:29Over there is the home of a woman who knows Hollywood best, a lady who shares her secrets with millions, Luella Parsons.
00:22:43Here we are. On your right is the home of that shy and modest man, Harvey's friend and yours, Jimmy Stewart.
00:23:09Now take a look on your left, and you'll see the home of that funny, funny man, Jack the Miser Benny.
00:23:17Behind that big hedge over there lives a little man who is Santa Claus to the whole world, Edmund Gwen. Remember Miracle on 34th Street?
00:23:39Oh, that was a wonderful picture. Did you see it? You missed something. I'd like to know where my favorite mule, Francis, lives.
00:23:50What's that?
00:23:52Oh, excuse me.
00:23:53That's all right.
00:23:55Haven't you any interest in how the other half lives?
00:23:58No, not particularly. I'm just crazy about bus rides. Gives me a chance to get off my feet.
00:24:05And here is the home of a man who's good with the jokes and a genius at the piano, Oscar Levant.
00:24:12Oh, I heard him play a Gershwin concert once. He was just great.
00:24:17What is this, the story of your life?
00:24:20Were you wondering where our Glamour Girls are? All right, here's your answer.
00:24:25On the right, you see the home of that fine actress, Barbara Stanwyck.
00:24:29The White House, also on the right, is where lovely Jane Wyman lives.
00:24:33All right, here's your answer. On the right, you see the home of that fine actress, Barbara Stanwyck.
00:24:39The White House, also on the right, is where lovely Jane Wyman lives.
00:24:52You know, you just like me for my lighter, that's all.
00:24:55I could give up smoking.
00:24:59Thanks.
00:25:00Don't mention it.
00:25:04If this is a sample of your work, you're not very good at pick-ups.
00:25:08I know.
00:25:10I haven't had very much experience at it.
00:25:13This is the first time I ever try to pick up a girl.
00:25:16Oh, gee, that's too bad.
00:25:18I should be better at it.
00:25:20How's that?
00:25:22Well, I'm one of those terrible fellas that frightens the farmer's daughter, you know.
00:25:26I'm a traveling salesman, only a kind of backwards one.
00:25:28Yeah, you could use a few tips, like,
00:25:31I'm sad and lonely, just want someone to talk to.
00:25:35Don't know any nice girls in this great big town.
00:25:38How about a few laughs?
00:25:40You know,
00:25:42I wanted to say all those things to you just now, only on the level.
00:25:46Thanks, coach.
00:25:48Do you mind if I sit here?
00:25:50Well, there's not much I can do about it, you're here.
00:25:52You know something, I was a farmer's daughter once.
00:25:55Really?
00:25:57Yeah.
00:25:59I don't know what it is, but you don't scare me at all.
00:26:23Well, thanks for the use of the lighter. Bye.
00:26:26Oh, uh...
00:26:29Oh, just a minute.
00:26:31In case...
00:26:33In case you ever need a deep freeze, my name's Harry Graham from San Francisco.
00:26:36Oh, well, that's nice.
00:26:38And mine's Phyllis Martin from here.
00:26:40From here? This doesn't look like very good farmland.
00:26:42You told me you were a farmer's daughter.
00:26:44Yes, well, that was a long time ago.
00:26:46Thanks.
00:26:48Oops, doesn't work.
00:26:50Well, remember me to Jack Benny.
00:26:52You know about traveling salesmen.
00:26:54You kill me.
00:26:56They have very large expense accounts and frequently buy dinner for pretty girls they meet on buses.
00:26:59Well, I must say, your style's improving fast.
00:27:01But I'm afraid I can't, sorry.
00:27:03I'm sorry, too.
00:27:05Yeah, well...
00:27:11Do you like Chinese cooking?
00:27:13Sure.
00:27:15Why? Have you changed your mind?
00:27:17I know a place that has the greatest water chestnuts in town.
00:27:19If you can stand water chestnuts.
00:27:20I'm mad about them. Let's go.
00:27:22All right.
00:27:31Early American Chinese.
00:27:33You're gonna love it.
00:27:44Little place, isn't it?
00:27:46Do we have to eat here?
00:27:48Oh, yes, it's a must.
00:27:50Good evening, Miss Martin.
00:27:52Good evening, sir.
00:27:54Will you take care of the gentleman for me?
00:27:56Right this way, sir.
00:27:58I'll have a drink at the bar while I'm waiting for the lady.
00:28:00Good.
00:28:03Scotch and soda, please.
00:28:20Here you are, sir.
00:28:22Oh, thank you.
00:28:47Dinner's ready. Table's over there.
00:28:48Oh, no.
00:28:50What are we playing, charades?
00:28:52The outfit came with the job. I work here.
00:28:54I don't believe any of this.
00:28:56Well, the pain will wear off in a minute. Just follow me.
00:29:02Egg soup. Very healing.
00:29:04I ordered the rest of the dinner for you, too.
00:29:06Aren't you allowed to sit with the customers?
00:29:08Uh-uh. Maybe later.
00:29:10Go on, eat your soup.
00:29:12It's the only genuine Chinese dish we serve here.
00:29:14The guy who owns the place used to run a string of hot dog stands.
00:29:16His name's Hannigan.
00:29:18Would you like a hot dog?
00:29:20No, I can't. Try it.
00:29:22How is it?
00:29:24Mmm. Tastes good.
00:29:26Say, uh, where are all the people?
00:29:28Oh, Sunday's a quiet.
00:29:30And all the rest of the week.
00:29:32How long have you been working here?
00:29:34About six months.
00:29:36I needed a job, and Hannigan needed someone to liven up the joint.
00:29:38You can see I've been a harling success.
00:29:40Come on, sit down, huh?
00:29:42No, I can't.
00:29:44Say, uh, when'd you say that farm was?
00:29:46I didn't.
00:29:48Well, Pennsylvania.
00:29:50How'd you get all the way to Los Angeles?
00:29:52Well, I wanted to see the world.
00:29:54Well, you started with China, huh?
00:29:56That's right. You know something?
00:29:58They've never heard of chop suey in China.
00:30:00You don't say.
00:30:02That's right. It's the house specialty here.
00:30:04And the next course, you can stand it.
00:30:11Uh, this isn't as nice as Barbara's tamwix,
00:30:13but it's closer to my work.
00:30:15Here, let me.
00:30:17Oh, thanks.
00:30:23Well, thanks for a lovely evening.
00:30:25It was nothing.
00:30:27Drop in again sometime.
00:30:30So long.
00:30:32You know, we've been together seven hours,
00:30:34and I still don't know a thing about you.
00:30:36Except that you're the nicest stranger
00:30:38I ever met on a bus.
00:30:40Well, I don't know anything about you either.
00:30:41Let's leave it that way, huh?
00:30:43All right.
00:30:47I will tell you one thing about myself, though.
00:30:49What's that?
00:30:51On that bus this afternoon,
00:30:53I felt just as lonely as you did.
00:30:55I feel better now.
00:31:03I guess all traveling salesmen are alike, huh?
00:31:06Some of us are quite harmless.
00:31:08Yeah, you can say that.
00:31:10Good night.
00:31:15I never expected to see Phyllis again,
00:31:18but I knew I'd remember this day
00:31:20when two strangers helped each other
00:31:22through a lonely Sunday.
00:31:25I felt good again.
00:31:27Not very sleepy.
00:31:32We're ready with your call to San Francisco.
00:31:34Yes, thank you, operator.
00:31:36I'll call you back.
00:31:37Yes, thank you, operator.
00:31:39Eve?
00:31:41My, two calls in one day.
00:31:43Well, never mind, darling.
00:31:45This is deductible business.
00:31:47Monkey business.
00:31:49I cheated on you today.
00:31:51I thought you should be the first to know.
00:31:53Haven't you heard?
00:31:55The wife is always the last to know.
00:31:57I'm serious.
00:31:59A beautiful brunette, all curves and soft shoulders.
00:32:01How wonderful.
00:32:03I hope you'll be very happy together.
00:32:05What kind of talk is that?
00:32:07You're mighty sure of me, aren't you?
00:32:09Very sure of you, my darling.
00:32:11She wasn't really beautiful, just nice.
00:32:13Kind of a funny little mouse.
00:32:16Don't you want to know how I made out?
00:32:18Oh, I forgot.
00:32:20I heard that Duff's may open three more retail outlets
00:32:22in Los Angeles County.
00:32:24Got a pencil handy.
00:32:26Better write down this name and address.
00:32:28Are you listening?
00:32:30Here it is.
00:32:32He's the merchandise manager.
00:32:34Yes, I'm listening, Eve.
00:32:35I wish you were here with me right now.
00:32:37I didn't even touch her.
00:32:39Touch who?
00:32:41You know, the funny little mouse.
00:32:43What a shame.
00:32:45Better luck next time.
00:32:47Harry, I got a special delivery from mother today.
00:32:49Oh, what's the news?
00:32:51Her father's quite ill.
00:32:53Nothing serious, I suppose, but I'm a little worried.
00:32:55I wouldn't want more, darling.
00:32:57I'm sure he'll be all right.
00:32:59Eve, I've got to make the rounds.
00:33:01I'll call you in a couple days.
00:33:03Good night.
00:33:05Good night.
00:33:20And in a couple of days, I did get home.
00:33:22Dead tired and a little bit sick
00:33:24of the deep freeze business.
00:33:27I only wanted a weekend with Eve.
00:33:30But she had other plans.
00:33:32Big plans.
00:33:34Tom Morgan, our lawyer, was there.
00:33:36And Carl Forbes.
00:33:38He was a buyer for the Redmond chain.
00:33:41I'd never been able to sell him.
00:33:43Then Eve decided she'd try the woman's touch.
00:33:47Why did you ever send your wife in to sell me?
00:33:49She packs quite a punch.
00:33:51Hadn't you heard?
00:33:53Eve's the brains, I'm the brawn.
00:33:55Oh, don't listen to him.
00:33:57I'm just Harry's little secretary trying to get along.
00:33:59I was afraid you'd ask me how the thing worked.
00:34:01Well, how does it work?
00:34:03Would you like some more coffee?
00:34:05No, thanks.
00:34:07Now tell us all about the superior mechanical features.
00:34:09All right, but stop me if this gets too complicated for you.
00:34:11In the home size,
00:34:13there's a special condenser that eliminates
00:34:15the fan noise and the outside moisture.
00:34:17The single phase motor is completely sealed,
00:34:21so it has greater efficiency.
00:34:23And we can prove to you in normal operations
00:34:25that our product will save you in electricity
00:34:27two and a half cents per hour.
00:34:29And the lead is counterbalanced.
00:34:30We just happen to have a model in the kitchen.
00:34:32And if you have your combination
00:34:34Phillips screwdriver handy, Mr. Forbes,
00:34:36I'd be happy to take the freezer apart for you.
00:34:38Any questions?
00:34:40No, no questions.
00:34:42And no demonstration, please.
00:34:44I'm convinced.
00:34:46At least almost.
00:34:48Perhaps another little brandy?
00:34:50Harry, Mr. Forbes would like some more brandy.
00:34:52Harry?
00:34:54Oh, of course.
00:34:56Sorry.
00:34:57Tom?
00:34:59No thanks, no more.
00:35:01How about a little poker?
00:35:03An evening so nice we might play on the terrace.
00:35:05I'm afraid of you, but I'm game.
00:35:07Me too.
00:35:12Come on, Harry, let's have at it.
00:35:20You know, I think we're really on our way.
00:35:22I'm sure we got Forbes.
00:35:24It's the power of a woman, Phyllis.
00:35:25Oh, I'm so happy.
00:35:27I'm so sleepy.
00:35:29Good night, darling.
00:35:32Eve.
00:35:34I just figured something out.
00:35:36In the last month, we've been together
00:35:38six days and 14 hours,
00:35:40not counting when we're asleep.
00:35:42It doesn't make any sense.
00:35:46Did you hear me?
00:35:48Six days and 14 hours.
00:35:50Eve, let's go away tomorrow.
00:35:52It doesn't matter where,
00:35:54just as long as we're together, huh?
00:35:57Of course, we'll go away sometime, darling.
00:35:59We'll go to all those glamorous places
00:36:01that Holiday writes about.
00:36:03We'll do what Frisk happened to.
00:36:05Let's not wait, Eve.
00:36:07Marriage is the only thing that really matters.
00:36:10I love you.
00:36:12I love you.
00:36:14I love you.
00:36:16I love you.
00:36:17Marriage is the only thing that really matters.
00:36:19I love our marriage.
00:36:21Good night, darling.
00:36:31So I hit the road again
00:36:33when I got back to Los Angeles.
00:36:36One tea coming up,
00:36:38rice cakes, and you're fortune free.
00:36:41Oh, come on, sit down, huh?
00:36:43Just for once.
00:36:45You want me to lose my job?
00:36:48What does it say?
00:36:50You will travel far.
00:36:52Well, that's right in the button for a traveling salesman.
00:36:54Here's another one.
00:36:56Money and fortune await you.
00:36:58That's better.
00:37:00And the last one.
00:37:02Dance and the world dances with you.
00:37:04Wow.
00:37:06Things are warming up.
00:37:08Do you like to dance?
00:37:10I don't know.
00:37:12It's been a long time.
00:37:14Well, do you want to take a chance with me?
00:37:15All right.
00:37:17When you finish tonight, where will we go?
00:37:19Oh, why don't we stay here?
00:37:21It's so romantic.
00:37:23You're a little character.
00:37:25Miss Martin, over there.
00:37:27Sorry.
00:37:29See you later.
00:37:33That night we danced.
00:37:37There were other evenings with Phyllis, too.
00:37:40We asked nothing of each other.
00:37:43I had never kissed her.
00:37:45Never touched her.
00:37:47Just being together was enough.
00:37:50But all the time I suppose we were fooling ourselves.
00:37:54Ready.
00:37:56Good night, Sam.
00:37:58Good night.
00:38:00Thanks.
00:38:05Well.
00:38:07Phyllis, tomorrow is my birthday.
00:38:09Do you want to have dinner with me?
00:38:11Help me celebrate.
00:38:13I'd love to.
00:38:15I'll pick you up at seven.
00:38:17Sure you haven't anything better to do?
00:38:19I'm sure.
00:38:21Okay.
00:38:23Phyllis.
00:38:35Good night, Harry.
00:38:37Good night.
00:38:39Oh.
00:38:41See you tomorrow then, huh?
00:38:43At seven.
00:39:01I spent my birthday trying not to think of Phyllis.
00:39:05Still I felt her close.
00:39:07I was finding out that I was not the take-it-and-leave-it kind.
00:39:11I knew then I couldn't see Phyllis again,
00:39:13that night or any night.
00:39:15I felt like someone who walks away from the edge of a cliff
00:39:18back onto solid ground.
00:39:21I felt pretty low, too,
00:39:23about walking out on her.
00:39:25But it was better this way.
00:39:27Much better.
00:39:30Come in.
00:39:32Come in.
00:39:36Tray's over there.
00:39:42Not much of a way to spend your birthday.
00:39:44Phyllis.
00:39:46Didn't you get my message?
00:39:48Sure I got it. That's why I came over.
00:39:50I was worried.
00:39:52What's wrong?
00:39:54Nothing serious. I think I'll live.
00:39:56Just a headache I couldn't shake.
00:39:58Yeah?
00:40:00Feels better. Much better.
00:40:02Oh, I brought you a birthday present.
00:40:04It's nothing much.
00:40:06Just a Cadillac.
00:40:08Well, don't you want to open it?
00:40:10Sure, I'll open it.
00:40:12A bit flashy, but I thought you'd like it.
00:40:15Smells good. I do like it.
00:40:18Thank you, Phyllis.
00:40:20Well, I may as well put a gift to work.
00:40:23Just close your eyes now.
00:40:25It'll take that headache away.
00:40:30It's working already.
00:40:37Any happy returns?
00:40:46You know something?
00:40:48The headache's all gone.
00:40:50We're going to have that dinner after all.
00:40:52Oh, no, we're not going anywhere.
00:40:54You're going to take it easy.
00:40:56Lady, you have healing powers that are miraculous.
00:40:57I can already hear a soft piano,
00:40:59champagne corks popping,
00:41:01and I know just the place we're going to.
00:41:03We're going to Acapulco.
00:41:05You're crazy.
00:41:07Yes, and I need a shave, too.
00:41:09Look, I'll go home and get into something slinky.
00:41:11Then pick me up in 15 minutes, huh?
00:41:13All right.
00:41:15I'll get into something real uncomfortable.
00:41:19You kill me.
00:41:23See you.
00:41:27See you.
00:41:54Oh, it's such a lovely night.
00:41:55This is going to be even better than the last party.
00:41:58I'm glad your birthday only comes once a year.
00:42:00This once was worth it.
00:42:04Acapulco.
00:42:06You know, I never thought I'd make it.
00:42:08And only 30 minutes from downtown.
00:42:10You know, you fall in love here.
00:42:12Goes with the check.
00:42:14When did you make that up?
00:42:16Just now.
00:42:18Have you ever been in love?
00:42:20I've tried it.
00:42:22You know what I think?
00:42:23I'm running away ever since.
00:42:25Am I right?
00:42:27I bet you read poems, too.
00:42:29Yeah, he was with the occupation forces in Germany.
00:42:33You've heard of those dear John letters, haven't you?
00:42:35Yeah, sure.
00:42:37Well, I got a dear Phyllis.
00:42:39Seems I lost out to a little Freulein.
00:42:41I guess all men are no good, huh?
00:42:43Oh, I don't know.
00:42:45I think there are one or two nice ones left in circulation.
00:42:48Here's looking at your Phyllis.
00:42:50Thanks.
00:42:54You know, you're a funny one.
00:42:57Don't you want to know if there's someone in my life,
00:42:59whether I'm married, divorced,
00:43:01whether I have six children,
00:43:03whether I've spent any time in jail?
00:43:05No.
00:43:07Why not?
00:43:09What good would it do me
00:43:11if I didn't know all those things?
00:43:13I like you as you are.
00:43:15I like you as you are.
00:43:17I like you as you are.
00:43:19I like you as you are.

00:43:31And I'm afraid of being in love again.
00:43:54I'm afraid of being in love again.

00:45:02SEBASTIAN JOSEPH
00:45:04Steve?
00:45:05STEVE
00:45:07Steve?
00:45:19Steve.
00:45:21What's wrong?
00:45:22Darling, I'm so glad you're back.
00:45:24What's the matter?
00:45:26Father's had a heart attack.
00:45:27His condition's critical and I have to go at once.
00:45:30Oh, poor baby.
00:45:32I'm sorry.
00:45:34You're such a great guy.
00:45:35Do you want me to go with you?
00:45:37Thanks, but you better stay here and take care of things.
00:45:39Anyway, I've got the last seat on the plane.
00:45:42What time?
00:45:43Ten o'clock.
00:45:44I change planes at New Orleans for Miami.
00:45:46What about money?
00:45:47Oh, all right.
00:45:48I cashed a check on company.
00:45:51How was the trip?
00:45:52Pretty good.
00:45:53We got the Barlow account, but it took some doing.
00:45:55Good boy.
00:45:56Partners in Ventura is complaining about factory deliveries.
00:45:58I got that all straightened out.
00:46:00Oh, fine.
00:46:01Well, I'll take care of the office here until you get back.
00:46:04If you need any help, call.
00:46:05I'll hop a plane.
00:46:07Maybe he'll pull out of it, huh?
00:46:09I hope so.
00:46:10Oh, I almost forgot.
00:46:16How lovely.
00:46:18Do you like it?
00:46:19I'm crazy about it.
00:46:21Put it on for me, will you?
00:46:23What do I have to thank for this?
00:46:25All that new work with Barlow's,
00:46:27all that cute little mouse you told me about.
00:46:29Did my boy step out of line?
00:46:31You thanked me.
00:46:32Oh, and I do like this.
00:46:35Oh, Eve, this last trip,
00:46:38it's no good being away from each other.
00:46:40How would you like me to be around all the time?
00:46:42Could you stand it?
00:46:43What do you mean?
00:46:44One of these days soon we'll put a man on.
00:46:46I've got my eye on a fellow.
00:46:48I think I'm going to cry.
00:46:50I should be so happy if it went to...
00:46:52Finish your packing, darling.
00:46:54I'll make us a couple of drinks.
00:47:14I've been thinking about something.
00:47:16What was that?
00:47:17About your being here with me all the time.
00:47:21I didn't realize home meant that much to you.
00:47:24I've been so wrapped up in the business that
00:47:26I thought you liked things the way they are,
00:47:28traveling around and meeting people.
00:47:30I did, but I've had it.
00:47:31Now I want to stay put.
00:47:33And I was wrong about something else, too.
00:47:35Wrong?
00:47:36For nearly four years,
00:47:37ever since the doctor said,
00:47:39No baby.
00:47:40I hated myself and you and everybody.
00:47:43I was resentful when you suggested adopting one.
00:47:46I couldn't see taking care of somebody else's child.
00:47:49Remember that?
00:47:50Yes, I remember.
00:47:52I was wrong.
00:47:53What made you think of it now, after so much time?
00:47:56Maybe it was the telegram from home.
00:47:58I suddenly thought how much my family meant to me
00:48:01and how much they loved me.
00:48:04It seemed selfish not to pass it along
00:48:06to a little child that needed it.
00:48:08Even if it isn't your own?
00:48:10It doesn't seem to make any difference.
00:48:12Do you still want one?
00:48:13Yes, of course I do.
00:48:14Well, then, would you see maybe about getting one
00:48:16while I'm away?
00:48:17Yes, I will, Eve.
00:48:18Tomorrow morning, the very first thing.
00:48:20I thought you'd forgotten all about it,
00:48:22that the business was our baby.
00:48:24Will you forgive me for taking so long?
00:48:26Yes, I think.
00:48:27Announcing the departure of American Airlines
00:48:29flight number 516 to Atlanta, New Orleans,
00:48:32connecting with Miami.
00:48:34All aboard, please.
00:48:35Well, that's us.
00:48:39Let's go.
00:48:50So that's how I first crossed your path, Mr. Jordan.
00:48:53I called you on the phone wanting to know how to start.
00:48:56We wanted a little boy or a little girl.
00:48:59Didn't make any difference which.
00:49:01And we wanted it faster than any child
00:49:03had ever been adopted before.
00:49:05But you told me it wasn't as easy as all that.
00:49:08And how right you were.
00:49:10Yes.
00:49:11You wanted a ride, roughshod, over all our rules.
00:49:15Now, what changed you?
00:49:17What happened after that?
00:49:21I stayed close to the business
00:49:23except for three flying trips to Florida.
00:49:25You see, Eve's father had improved,
00:49:27but it took a lot out of her mother.
00:49:29She collapsed.
00:49:30Went on month after month.
00:49:31There was nothing Eve could do except stay there.
00:49:34It had been over three months
00:49:36since I had seen any of our accounts.
00:49:38The business showed it.
00:49:41I had to make the rounds.
00:49:43I did my work.
00:49:45I didn't see anybody but the customers in Los Angeles.
00:49:49Of course, I thought of Phyllis.
00:49:52I wanted to see her.
00:49:54But not the way I saw her the last time.
00:49:58Anyway, before I left town,
00:50:00I dropped in at the Canton Cafe.
00:50:04I saw you there.
00:50:06I asked you to come.
00:50:08I was waiting for the afternoon.
00:50:11So I came.
00:50:18Hi, Sam.
00:50:19Hello, Mr. Crane.
00:50:21We missed you.
00:50:22Thanks, Sam.
00:50:24Miss Martin here? Phyllis?
00:50:26No. She doesn't work anymore.
00:50:28When did she leave?
00:50:29About a month ago, maybe a little more.
00:50:32I didn't say. Will you have dinner here tonight, Mr. Graham?
00:50:36No.
00:50:38No, thank you.
00:50:42Thanks, Sam.
00:50:54Yes?
00:50:55Is Miss Martin in? Miss Phyllis Martin?
00:50:57What do you want?
00:50:58My name's Harry Graham. I'm an old friend of hers.
00:51:01Does she still live here?
00:51:02She still lives here, but she isn't feeling well.
00:51:05She doesn't want to see anyone.
00:51:06Oh, I've got to see her.
00:51:07You remember me, don't you, Mr. Graham?
00:51:09I've spoken to you on the phone several times.
00:51:11Oh, yes. Yes, I remember.
00:51:13Come in. Thank you.
00:51:15I think she needs you.
00:51:16Her room's right up there, first on the left.
00:51:33Come in.
00:51:38Harry.
00:51:39Hello, Phyllis.
00:51:51Nothing.
00:51:53It's good to see you again.
00:51:56I just got back from San Francisco.
00:51:57I've been working there for the last few months.
00:52:00I went to the restaurant and they told me.
00:52:03And I had trouble getting past your guard downstairs.
00:52:06Well, now that you've found me again...
00:52:08How are things in the deep freeze business?
00:52:10What was it? Hot water heaters?
00:52:12Phyll.
00:52:14What did the landlady mean just now when she said she needs you?
00:52:18I don't know.
00:52:20Come on.
00:52:21Look, I don't need anybody.
00:52:24I can take care of myself.
00:52:27I'm a big girl now.
00:52:31Phyll.
00:52:33Yeah?
00:52:34Was it that night?
00:52:36My birthday?
00:52:37It's yours, if that's what you mean.
00:52:41I know.
00:52:44Harry.
00:52:46You don't have to do anything about it.
00:52:48But I want to do something about it.
00:52:50Oh, no, I don't trap my men this way.
00:52:54You're free just as you always were.
00:52:56Why didn't you want to... What were you afraid of?
00:53:00I don't know.
00:53:02I guess maybe I was afraid you wouldn't want me to have it.
00:53:06I don't think I could stand that.
00:53:09You see, I never had anything of my own until now.
00:53:14Don't be afraid.
00:53:16Of course I want you to have the baby.
00:53:19I'll take care of everything.
00:53:22Don't worry.
00:53:24Look.
00:53:28I've got some things to do.
00:53:30You stay here and rest a while.
00:53:32I'll be back later.
00:53:34Good.
00:53:36And Phyll.
00:53:39I'm glad.
00:53:41Terribly glad I found you.
00:53:44So am I.
00:53:47Come on.
00:53:54You get some rest.
00:54:01Mr. Graham.
00:54:02Mr. Graham, this is Dr. Wallace.
00:54:04He's taking care of Phyllis.
00:54:06I was just coming up to see her.
00:54:07How is she, Doctor?
00:54:09Could I speak to you for a minute?
00:54:10Yes, surely.
00:54:11Excuse me.
00:54:12I think she's going to be all right.
00:54:15She's had a rough time of it this last month.
00:54:17Two transfusions.
00:54:19And she's not very strong to start with.
00:54:22Then there's the mental, emotional state to contend with.
00:54:25She's been in a lot of pain.
00:54:27Then there's the mental, emotional state to contend with.
00:54:30You can understand.
00:54:31Yes, I understand.
00:54:33I think things will be better now that you're here.
00:54:36I'll take care of everything.
00:54:37Please give her the best.
00:54:39I'm glad she means something to you.
00:54:41She can be hurt just like the rest of us.
00:54:44Fooled me at first with that flip, hard act of hers.
00:54:47But that's not the real Phyllis.
00:54:49You must know that.
00:54:58How can a man call a woman, his wife for eight years,
00:55:03someone whom you love, who loves you,
00:55:06how can you call her and tell her that you must have a divorce?
00:55:10Worse than that, you've been unfaithful.
00:55:14You're going to be a father.
00:55:17How can you hurt someone so much?
00:55:28Hello? Eve?
00:55:31Oh, Harry, I've been trying to reach you.
00:55:34What is it, Eve? Your father?
00:55:37About an hour ago.
00:55:41I'm sorry, darling.
00:55:43I'm sorry.
00:55:45I'll have to stay with Mother a while,
00:55:47and then I'll come home to you.
00:55:51Can you hear me?
00:55:53Yes, of course I can hear you.
00:55:56Are you all right, Harry?
00:55:59Yes, of course I'm all right, Eve.
00:56:01Give your mother my love and take care of yourself.
00:56:06Goodbye.
00:56:07Goodbye.
00:56:26Goodbye.
00:56:50Hello, Finn.
00:56:52Hello.
00:56:55I forgot to ask you something.
00:56:58Yeah, what was that?
00:57:00Will you marry me?
00:57:03No.
00:57:05Not this way.
00:57:07I'm not asking you.
00:57:09I'm asking you.
00:57:15I hate to take you out of circulation like this.
00:57:19There must be a waiting line.
00:57:21There's nothing like that.
00:57:24And no one like you.
00:57:27Are you sure you want me?
00:57:30I'm sure.
00:57:33I do love you, Harry.
00:57:38And I'm so glad I do.
00:57:45I stayed with her until she fell asleep.
00:57:48You may laugh, Mr. Jordan,
00:57:50but for the first time I felt needed.
00:57:53I loved Eve, but I never felt she needed me.
00:57:57How did you expect to get away with it?
00:58:00I didn't.
00:58:02What did you do when Mrs. Graham came home a few weeks after your other marriage?
00:58:07Why didn't you tell her then?
00:58:10Wasn't that the plan?
00:58:12Yes, that was the plan.
00:58:14That was also the time when you came in again, Mr. Jordan.
00:58:19Do you have some cream?
00:58:21Oh, I have been away a long time.
00:58:23I never take cream, remember me?
00:58:25I'm sorry, I forgot.
00:58:28I have a surprise for you.
00:58:30A surprise?
00:58:31A sentimental surprise. Come on, bring your coffee.
00:58:39Eve, there's some things we've got to talk about.
00:58:42Father wanted you to have this watch.
00:58:45It was grandfather's, and then when father and mother married,
00:58:48it was a wedding gift to the groom.
00:58:50Grandfather said that having a watch and chain
00:58:52made a man feel more like a man,
00:58:54sort of like a moustache cuff, I suppose.
00:58:56I wish I could have thanked him for it.
00:58:58Well, he told me to tell you to take very good care of it
00:59:01because it should be passed down to our son.
00:59:03He said it was a lucky watch and should be kept in circulation.
00:59:07Our son, I'm glad he didn't know how I let you down.
00:59:12You haven't let me down.
00:59:14You haven't let me down. You couldn't.
00:59:16Yes, I did.
00:59:18When I learned I couldn't have a child,
00:59:20and that's when I became the little efficient white-collared girl,
00:59:24I forgot some things.
00:59:26You didn't forget. Maybe I became the absentee husband.
00:59:29One of the show of the business world, we were smarter than the rest.
00:59:32And we did show them.
00:59:33Listen, Eve...
00:59:34Come on, I've got another nice surprise for you.
00:59:45The light doesn't work. Leave the door open so we can see.
00:59:48I cleaned it up today.
00:59:50But don't worry about your golf clubs.
00:59:52I put all our junk in the closet, and I stored the suitcases.
00:59:55Oh, I think it's going to be very nice when we get it fixed up.
00:59:58Go a little slower, Eve. I'm not with you.
01:00:00Remember Mr. Jordan?
01:00:02Mr. Jordan?
01:00:03When I left for Florida, you said you'd look into the adoption business,
01:00:07and you told me about Mr. Jordan.
01:00:09Oh, yes. Now I remember.
01:00:12Now I remember. I spoke to him on the phone.
01:00:16What about it?
01:00:17Well, that's a surprise.
01:00:19I called him this morning.
01:00:20He said he wanted to see us both, but he thought he could help us.
01:00:23Of course, it may be a while.
01:00:25So you decided to go ahead and fix the place up?
01:00:28Well, I know it was impossible, but I couldn't wait.
01:00:31I thought we'd put the bed here,
01:00:34and the chest of drawers over here,
01:00:37and one of those little rubber tabs in case he's too small to use ours.
01:00:42I get it.
01:00:46You still do want a child, don't you?
01:00:49Is adopting a baby terribly important to you?
01:00:52Oh, yes. More important than I ever knew before.
01:00:56Except for you, it would mean everything to me.
01:01:00All right, then.
01:01:02I guess we'll go see Mr. Jordan.
01:01:04All right.
01:01:06So that's how I crossed your path once more, Jordan.
01:01:09What was in your mind?
01:01:11Did you think you could live this lie for a lifetime?
01:01:15Well, when I realized how much a child meant to Eve,
01:01:18I decided to help her by staying married until the baby became legally ours.
01:01:24Then I'd get out of her life.
01:01:27I must say, that was both a gallant and a foolish scheme.
01:01:32Those were months of panic, fear.
01:01:36Like the night my son was born prematurely,
01:01:39just as the doctor predicted.
01:01:46I was a man of my word.
01:01:48I was a man of my word.
01:01:50I was a man of my word.
01:01:52I was a man of my word.
01:01:54I was a man of my word.
01:01:56I was a man of my word.
01:01:58I was a man of my word.
01:02:11Mr. Graham.
01:02:19Mr. Graham, you have a little boy.
01:02:21You can see him through the window down there.
01:02:28The axe began to fall one day, not so long ago, when I'd just gotten in from San Bernardino.
01:02:53I'd stopped by the office to clean up my desk.
01:02:56It was Eve's and my anniversary. I tried to get home, but I couldn't make it.
01:03:07Is there a man in this joint that's been married eight years?
01:03:10Eve.
01:03:11Don't look so shocked. I'm your anniversary present.
01:03:16I almost didn't find you. I called all over to stay. And where are you staying?
01:03:19Oh, I'm not. I just got back from San Bernardino. Did you get my flowers?
01:03:24Oh, I didn't wait for that. I got your wire and decided something should be done about it.
01:03:27So here I am. Aren't you glad?
01:03:29Of course I am. I was just about to call you.
01:03:31Oh, never mind that. How about closing up the store and buying me a dinner?
01:03:35You bet I will.
01:03:36As a matter of fact, we're doing so well, I'll put it on the expense account.
01:03:38Let's get started on our ninth year.
01:03:47After dinner, Eve wanted to take a walk. I was afraid every step of the way.
01:03:51Yet I tried to get into the holiday spirit for her sake.
01:03:54For a moment, it was like old times, until...
01:03:57Mr. Graham, if you're going home, could you give me a lift?
01:04:03Some other time. See you, Ricky.
01:04:09Lucy.
01:04:11Store executive, son. I have dinner at that place now and then.
01:04:15What did he mean by home?
01:04:17Oh, the Chapman Park Hotel. I stayed there a while back.
01:04:22They live nearby.
01:04:25How about making?
01:04:27Love it.
01:04:33After I put Eve on the plane for San Francisco,
01:04:37I came home to fill us more of my insane double life.
01:04:41I was beginning to act and think like a criminal,
01:04:44afraid to be found out, yet sick of deceit and lies.
01:04:52Hello, Phil.
01:04:59Danny asleep?
01:05:00That's right.
01:05:04All right, Phil, out with it.
01:05:06Surprised you came back.
01:05:07What do you mean?
01:05:09Let it go.
01:05:11No, Phil, I won't let it go. I want you to tell me.
01:05:15All right.
01:05:17You must know I'm feeling a little cheap, that's all.
01:05:22Ricky.
01:05:23Worse than that, Ricky's mother.
01:05:25Oh, she couldn't wait for me, all the grisly details.
01:05:27Made a wonderful story out of it.
01:05:29You know, just like the Sunday papers.
01:05:32Husband's supposed to be out of town.
01:05:34Secretly meets another woman.
01:05:36Secretly?
01:05:37He might have done a needed job of it, Harry.
01:05:40Yes.
01:05:41Yes, you're right.
01:05:44Getting awfully excited over one, aren't I?
01:05:46There must have been others.
01:05:48No, no others.
01:05:50Well, that's a comfort.
01:05:52I'm behaving like a fool.
01:05:55After all, I dragged you into this marriage.
01:05:57Stop it, don't say that.
01:05:58It's not true and you know it.
01:06:00Leave me alone, will you?
01:06:01Listen to me.
01:06:03There's something I've got to tell you.
01:06:05Please, just leave me alone.
01:06:08Phil, Phil, you must listen.
01:06:10Harry, get out, will you?
01:06:13Phil.
01:06:14Get out.
01:06:22Get out.
01:06:46I stayed at a hotel that night.
01:06:49Made a date to see Phyllis the next day.
01:06:52There were things we had to talk about.
01:06:54She said she'd meet me in the park near the house.
01:06:58It's hard to explain my thoughts as I sat there.
01:07:01I had my way out.
01:07:03Now I could put an end to this nightmare.
01:07:06I loved Phyllis and her child.
01:07:08I didn't want to lose them.
01:07:10And I hated to bring the pain.
01:07:22Hello, Phyllis.
01:07:24Hi.
01:07:28Cigarette?
01:07:30No, thanks.
01:07:33How's Danny?
01:07:35He's fine.
01:07:37I had Miss Higgins come over and sit with him.
01:07:40You look tired.
01:07:42Yeah.
01:07:44I didn't sleep too well last night.
01:07:47Neither did I.
01:07:52What did you want to talk about, Harry?
01:07:56I've been thinking.
01:07:58I could manage $85 a week.
01:08:00Can you and Danny make it?
01:08:01Sure.
01:08:03You can get the divorce and all that.
01:08:05I'll pay for everything.
01:08:06I'm sorry it had to happen this way.
01:08:08I never meant to hurt you.
01:08:13I'll come around later and get my things.
01:08:16Okay, anytime.
01:08:22Goodbye, Phyll.
01:08:25Goodbye.
01:08:29Harry.
01:08:34This is crazy.
01:08:36I can't go through with it.
01:08:39I guess you just gave my ego a kick.
01:08:42Will you forgive me?
01:08:43I do love you so.
01:08:46You big lug.
01:08:48You know, I didn't sleep too well last night.
01:08:50You know, I didn't sleep last night.
01:08:53I kept thinking about our marriage.
01:08:55You know, the way we got into it.
01:08:58It wasn't fair to you.
01:08:59Don't say that, Phyll.
01:09:00Never. Do you hear me?
01:09:02Please.
01:09:04Take me home, will you?
01:09:07You really want me to?
01:09:09Oh, yes.
01:09:11We need you.
01:09:13Come on.
01:09:20So you had your out and couldn't take it.
01:09:32And yet all the time you knew it had to end this way.
01:09:36Now you're going to call the police.
01:09:39Well, maybe I ought to thank you.
01:09:46I'd like a taxi at 132 Brinkman Street, please.
01:09:50That's right, thank you.
01:09:53I'm not a policeman.
01:09:55It's not my duty to do anything but see
01:09:58that the juvenile wards of the state of California
01:10:01are given decent homes.
01:10:04I'll pick up my taxi outside.
01:10:14I can't figure out my feelings toward you.
01:10:18I despise you.
01:10:20And I pity you.
01:10:22I don't even want to shake your hand and yet...
01:10:28I almost wish you luck.
01:11:20Dearest Phyllis, just a moment ago I watched your sweet face as you slept,
01:11:26knowing I had to hurt you again.
01:11:29And when I tried to say goodbye to Danny, it was almost unbearable.
01:11:35I cannot expect you to understand why I'm about to leave you.
01:11:39I'm afraid I'll never see you again.
01:11:42I'm afraid I'll never see you again.
01:11:46I'm afraid I'll never see you again.
01:11:50I'm afraid I'll never see you again.
01:11:52I don't know what to tell you.
01:12:20Darling, how wonderful you're here.
01:12:22Why didn't you tell me?
01:12:24I couldn't. I have to go away.
01:12:25Go away? Where?
01:12:26I can't explain now. There isn't time.
01:12:28There isn't time? What do you mean? Tell me.
01:12:30I wanted to tell you. That's why I came back.
01:12:32But now there are people waiting for me downstairs.
01:12:35People? What are you saying?
01:12:36All I can do is pray that one day you'll forgive me.
01:12:39Try to remember one thing.
01:12:40I love you.
01:12:41I love you.
01:12:42I love you.
01:12:42I love you.
01:12:43I love you.
01:12:43I love you.
01:12:44I love you.
01:12:44I love you.
01:12:45I love you.
01:12:45I love you.
01:12:45I love you.
01:12:45I love you.
01:12:45I love you.
01:12:45I love you.
01:12:45I love you.
01:12:45All I can do is pray that one day you'll forgive me.
01:12:47Try to remember one thing.
01:12:49I love you.
01:12:50I've always loved you.
01:12:52But you can't go away like this.
01:12:53Oh, I love you, too.
01:12:54Dearest, it's the only way.
01:12:55Tom Morgan will call you.
01:12:57He knows all about it.
01:13:02Harry!
01:13:45Harry!
01:14:08Hello?
01:14:08Have you been talking?
01:14:09Yes, Tom.
01:14:11Tell me now.
01:14:12I hate to tell you this, but I have to.
01:14:14Harry's been married all week.
01:14:44Harry Graham is in no sense a hero, certainly.
01:15:05But neither is he a monster.
01:15:06He's an ordinary man that made one terrible mistake.
01:15:11In this case, there's a peculiar sense of irony.
01:15:15If Harry Graham had taken Phyllis Martin as his mistress,
01:15:20some people would have winked an eye and turned their head.
01:15:25But because he gave her and the child she bore him his name
01:15:30and an honorable place in the community,
01:15:34he must be utterly destroyed.
01:15:35Now, I don't deny that the defendant should be punished.
01:15:41But I do believe that in this case,
01:15:45punishment might well be tempered with mercy.
01:15:55As the prosecutor has pointed out,
01:15:57there are many big mismarriages going on that nobody knows about.
01:16:00The prosecutor is also quite correct in observing
01:16:04that this is a condition which strikes at the very roots of our society.
01:16:07Please stop it. I'm guilty. Why go on talking about it?
01:16:11As the counsel for the defense has brought out,
01:16:14there's irony in this case, tragic irony.
01:16:18I suspect that the defendant may have even loved both these women.
01:16:23Perhaps he even needed them both.
01:16:26I also suspect that the defendant
01:16:29I also suspect that he may now have lost them both.
01:16:35When he's once more a free man,
01:16:37it won't be a question of which woman he'll go back to,
01:16:41but rather which woman will take him back.
01:16:44That decision is theirs.
01:16:47Under any circumstances,
01:16:50he'll be forced to continue to support them both.
01:16:53And he will legalize the status of his son by naming him in his will.
01:16:59These are decent women, Mr. Graham.
01:17:02You're basically a decent man, and that's the whole point.
01:17:06When a man, even with the best intentions,
01:17:09breaks the moral laws we live by,
01:17:14we really don't need man-made laws to punish him.
01:17:18You'll find out that the penalty of the court
01:17:20is always the smallest punishment.
01:17:25Sentence will be passed before the jury.
01:17:27Sentence will be passed before this court
01:17:29one week from this day at 11 a.m.
01:17:32The court is adjourned.
