GOLDSBORO, NORTH CAROLINA — Last Friday a North Carolina family’s world was torn asunder during a fatal case of mistaken identity

According to CBS North Carolina, Billy Williams was at home sleeping Friday when one of his children woke him after hearing noises in the house. They thought someone was trying to break in.

Billy grabbed his gun and approached the lightless front door. Opening it, he was faced with a dark figure and, thinking it was a home intruder, he fired one fatal shot to the person’s neck.

Little did he know that person was his wife of 16 years, Gina Williams. She’d returned from work early.

Before Gina died, she reportedly told Billy, “I love you.”

Police are investigating the shooting and no charges have been filed against Billy as of yet, reported CBS North Carolina.
