Astronaut Buzz Aldrin was recently evacuated from the South Pole due to an illness, reports the BBC.
According to White Desert, the travel company that arranged the trip to the frozen expanse, Aldrin’s health had “deteriorated,” so he was flown to the McMurdo Station off the coast of Antarctica.
There, he was passed into the care of a United States Antarctic Program doctor, and his condition has since been described as “stable,” notes The Guardian.
Plans were made to fly him to New Zealand, “as soon as possible.”
Aldrin was part of NASA’s 1969 Apollo 11 mission and the second human to walk on the moon.
