THE USE OF 'SHOULD'



Think of the use of 'should', like an obligation to do something. It is about something, which is necessary to do. It is about the correct thing to do.

For example; 'You should look to the left, and to the right, before your cross the street.'

'Should' shows less possibility than 'shall'.


For example;

'I shall be happy to go with you', and 'I should be happy to go with you'.

'Should' also expresses duty.

We also use 'should', to give an advice.

'Should' can be used to show what is right or wrong.

For example; We can use 'should' to say when we want to do the right thing. And we can use 'should not', when we do not want to do the wrong thing. 'I should go to work on time.' 'You should not say that.'

If you compare the words 'must', 'ought' and 'should', should seems to be the least obligatory. It is less forceful for doing something, that 'ought' and 'must'.
