Donald Trump Is First Major Candidate To Receive No Major Newspaper Endorsements

Donald Trump hasn't received any major newspaper endorsements and that may have a material impact on the election outcome.

The 2016 presidential election is unprecedented in a number of ways and one example of that is the missing newspaper endorsements for the GOP nominee.
A piece in The Wrap points out, "With just a little over a month until election day, Donald Trump has racked up zero major newspaper endorsements, a first for any major party nominee in American history."
Among the outlets that have decided not to support Trump are some that have endorsed Republican candidates for decades.
While endorsing a Democratic candidate for the first time in its nearly 150-year history, the San Diego Union-Tribune noted, "Sixteen months into his campaign, Donald Trump remains Donald Trump. Despite constant counsel from GOP advisors and insiders to adopt a decorous public persona, Trump continues to lash out at critics, to insist complex problems can be solved with little effort..."
Also breaking a long-standing tradition, the Dallas Morning News said, "There is only one serious candidate on the presidential ballot in November. We recommend Hillary Clinton."
Ultimately, the question is how much of an impact these newspaper endorsements will have on the outcome of the election.
In an interview with The Wrap, Jack Pitney, a politics professor at Claremont McKenna College, remarked, “It’s significant...The cumulative effect of all these defections could have an impact on moderate Republicans.”
