GREENSBORO, NORTH CAROLINA — Two years after the deadly incident in Greensboro, North Carolina, police released a video last week showing an officer shooting a 47-year-old Vietnamese woman carrying a cleaver.
Officer Timothy Bloch from the Greensboro Police Department responded to a 911 call from Aberdeen Townhomes on March 25, 2014. The caller described how a woman holding a large blade was running around chasing her mother around the property.
The bodycam video shows Bloch arriving at the scene. He immediately can be heard asking neighbors, "Where is she? Is this her?"
Police say that Chieu Di Thi Vo, who was Vietnamese and understood scant English, came running towards Bloch with an 8-inch blade, reported Fox 8 News. Vo ignored Bloch's orders to put down the knife, and Bloch opened fire. She fell to the ground with the cleaver still in her hands and later died at a local hospital.
It's unclear why it's taken so long for the bodycam footage of the incident to be released, since the incident occurred more than two years ago. According to the New York Daily News, Vo's family and the local Southeast Asian community have expressed concern about how the case has been handled.
Two years later, state and local investigators have concluded that Bloch used reasonable force, reported Fox 8 News. Cleared of any wrongdoing, Bloch has since left the force of his own accord.
