ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA-- The grandmother of a 2-year-old boy was shot in the back when the child found a gun in a car seat pocket and accidentally fired it.

The Charlotte Observer reports the boy's grandmother and great aunt had earlier picked him up from a relative's home in Rock Hill on Sunday afternoon. As they approached a traffic light at Ogden Road and Heckle Boulevard just after 1 p.m., a shot rang out. When the women looked around they saw the boy holding the gun with both hands and he began to cry.

The toddler had somehow managed to pull the trigger and shoot his grandmother through the front passenger seat. Police initially believed the child's great aunt, the gun's lawful owner, had fired the shot, but this has since been ruled out.

Yet, she may still be in legal trouble for not properly securing the loaded .357 caliber revolver. Investigators working to decide what charges, if any, she will face.

The child's grandmother was treated at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte for non-life threatening injuries, Mark Bollinger of Rock Hill Police said during a press conference.
