TROY, MICHIGAN — A four-year-old boy shot himself in the leg with a loaded gun that was in his parent's car in Troy, Michigan on Friday afternoon, the Detroit Free Press reported.
Prior to the accident, the unidentified boy was shopping with his mother and ten-year-old brother at Kroger grocery store. When they were putting the groceries in the back of the Ford Mustang, the boy sat in the car and discovered the 9 millimeter Smith and Wesson. Around 1:18 p.m. the gun fired once, hitting the young boy above the waist. The bullet exited the boy's left thigh, WXYZ reported.
According to the Detroit Free Press, a retired police officer was nearby and called 911. EMS and police promptly arrived and the boy was taken to the hospital, where he was treated for his injuries. The boy's mother and father both have concealed weapons permits, but they haven't determined who left the weapon unlocked in the car.
Troy Police Capt. Robert Redmond told the Detroit Free Press: "We talked to both of them — we're not sure they're living together — and there's some disagreement about who left the weapon in the console. That doesn't matter to me. She's still responsible for the child's safety."
Redmond added that the mother might face charges of careless, reckless or negligent use of a firearm.
