THE DRUNKS / PIJANI
Text: Ivan Vyrypaev
Director: Boris Liješević

Drama Drunks by reputable Russian playwright Ivan Vyrypaev had its premiere in Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus two years ago. By successfully staging this piece, Atelier 212 reconfirms itself as a theater whose mission has been, ever since being founded, to promote new European drama in our theater life. The motive of drunkenness, situations in which an individual under the influence of alcohol loses control and crosses the boundaries of established social behavior, were used by the author to create an inspired, dark and comic drama about the precarious position of man in this world and about love as the only way to overcome existential anguish. Vyrypaev is inspired and has a lot of faith and hope in a man when he writes about the essence of life, faith in God, ways of finding meaning in life through love. Acting by the Atelier 212 ensemble is collective, but with enough space for individual development of each actor. Together, they successfully fulfill a difficult acting task, which is to act drunk without making it a stereotype, to play as an ensemble, and yet that every one of them can express his acting abilities. The play boasts a respectable, outstanding set-design by Aleksandar Denić. This performance is important also because it suggests a new development phase of director Boris Liješević in which, hopefully, he shall fully exercise his laboratory research in the field of acting and encourage our actors to leave the established flows and overcome their own limits.
