FORT SMITH, ARKANSAS — A muslim couple and their small child were asked to leave a shopping mall over the weekend because the husband was seen recording video on his phone around the plaza.
On December 19 at Central Mall, Alan Crawford, his wife Daphne Ridenour, and their son were escorted out of the plaza by five officers, after someone in the mall reported them to security, believing them to be suspected terrorists. The family, who is of the muslim faith, has since had to explain themselves through the media that they are not terrorists, contrary to what's been circulating in their community and online.
Alan Crawford actually served in the US army. He says he was just recording video on his phone, which does happen to be against the mall's regulations. Crawford was happy to leave, but told local media outlets he couldn't understand why five uniformed officers were necessary.
Facebook user Cory Milligan, who posted pictures of the family being walked out of shopping center, tagged the album with the caption "Cops escorting terrorists from the mall." His post has been shared 1000 times over the past 3 days, with Milligan commenting, "They were hollering 'aqudea.'" Others followed suit with similar ignorant and hateful posts on the comment thread.
Police said no crime was committed, and no charges will be filed.
