Taliban supreme leader killed after argument breaks out during supposed peace talks

QUETTA, PAKISTAN — The Taliban's head honcho was reportedly killed near the Pakistani border city of Quetta earlier this week, according to a New York Times report citing Afghan government officials.
Rival Taliban factions gathered on Tuesday at the home of the militant group's main judicial official, Qazi Haybatullah. They were reportedly there for what were supposed to have been peace talks, but an argument apparently broke out.
Over what exactly, nobody appears to know, but the dispute is believed to have led to a shootout that in turn led to the death of the Taliban Emir, Mullah Akhtar Muhammad Mansour.
Mullah Abdullah Sarhadi, a follower of one of Mullah Mansour's rival, Mullah Mansour Dadullah, is also believed to have also died in the firefight.
The Taliban are flatly denying claims of the Mullah's death and a spokesman for the group even promised to soon release an audio recording of his leader to prove once and for all he's still alive.
"We have already put efforts into sending our men to get a voice recording of the emir himself in order to avoid the growing confusion and assure the people about his well-being," group spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told the Times on Friday.
