Cuba Now! Hemingway's House But First, Seriously...

After breakfast our group we met with an affable very creditable former Cuban diplomat and university professor. We discussed politics, the prospects for and benefits that would accrue from improved relations between the United States and Cuba. He explained who the Cuban Communist Government works, with particular emphasis on elections and representation. The only bad thing about the meeting was that it was too short..

After about an hour we had to leave for our next event, a visit to the Santovenia Elderly Center in El Cerro, outside of Havana. This Catholic center houses ~ 500 seniors. There’s a long waiting list. There are accommodations for single men, single women, and married couples. Elders with assisted living needs are accepted. Funding comes from donations from the church and individuals rather than the Castro government.

For the first time since our arrival five days before, the weather was less than ideal. Undeterred, we bused out to San Francisco de Paula, a suburb 9 miles outside of Havana. There we visited Ernest Hemingway’s winter home from 1939 to 1960, Finca Vigia (Lookout Farm).

In the evening, the rain had stopped but it was windy when we went up the Morro Castle fortress to witness the 9 PM cannon show. Yes, it was a tourist event, but dramatic, especially the edited video which compresses the long lead up to the cannon firing.

This video was recorded on location on February 18, 2015, in 1080 HD and stereophonic sound and edited with Final Cut Pro. With noted exceptions, still pictures were taken photographed by Tony and Hessie Guida.
