Ecuador Opposition Refuses to Debate Tax Bills

Ecuador's right-wing opposition has refused to participate in the national debate called by President Rafael Correa on two progressive tax bills that they oppose. However, the country's social movements have taken up the offer and are raising awareness among the indigenous, peasant, and popular sectors on the need for the inheritance and capital gains taxes. Such measures, social organizations say, will only affect the wealthiest strata of the population and will help redistribute wealth and reduce inequality. Correa has accused the opposition of seeking to destabilize the country and foment a coup. Liz Scherffius reports from Quito. teleSUR
