College sex: financial aid director Joseph Bekken traded scholarship money for sex
The former financial aid director at North Idaho College is accused of offering scholarship cash to coeds in exchange for sex.
Joseph M. Bekken, 36, was charged on Thursday with attempting to procure a prostitute, attempting to misuse public money, bribery, using a computer in a scheme to defraud and burglary.
The married father of four has been fired and is being held in the Kootenai County Jail on $100,000 bail.
According to authorities, Bekken has been at this for years.
Police said while Bekken was at North Idaho College (NIC), he advertised on Craigslist for several semesters and agreed to meet a female coed at a Coeur d’Alene apartment complex on Feb. 2.
Coeur d’Alene police were first alerted to Bekken by FBI agents working internet crimes after they responded to ads that said, “Hello, I have a proposition for NIC students.”
With the okay from NIC president Joe Dunlap, Coeur d’Alene police set up a fake student account to respond to Bekken’s ads.
Bekken replied, “I have some extra grant money to allocate. Just looking for some potential fun on the side.” When police asked what that involved they were told, “I’m completely open. Sex, oral, etc…watching.”
The male undercover police officer continued to email conversation with Bekken for the next 10 days, which also included an exchange of photos.
A few days later, the undercover officer got emails telling him how to access the scholarship money. They agreed to meet at 11 a.m. on Feb. 2 at an apartment on Julia Street behind a Lowe’s store.
When Bekken knocked on the door, the undercover cop and an FBI agent came up to him and took him to the police station for questioning.
