BEIJING CENSORS VIRAL FILM ON CHINESE POLLUTION
This hard hitting documentary about pollution in China was removed from the Internet over the weekend by Beijing censors, but it has already been viewed over 170 million times, and has sparked lively debate across the country. The now inaccessible film, “Under the Dome”, was made by journalist Chai Jing, and explains in straightforward terms the causes and consequences of China`s notorious smog problem.
The former anchor for China`s state television addresses a number of key points in her film : China`s reliance on coal, the growing number of motorists, local government`s stalling on the closure of factories over fears of layoffs, the violation of environmental laws, and also the trivial fines proposed to punish polluters.
The documentary, which has received widespread praise on social media, with networkers becoming increasingly concerned about public health matters, is urging China to take immediate and concrete action to combat atmospheric pollution. It has even drawn support from Chen Jining, China`s newly appointed Minister of the Environment.
The no holds barred film may well have led locals to believe that the authorities would finally sit up and tackle the problem head on, so the decision to purge it from the Internet has angered and disappointed many. This man for example says he wishes the government would focus on removing the smog and not the documentary, which he feels raises all the right questions.
