An investigation is underway after an emergency operator told a distressed caller to "stop whining". The 911 dispatcher in Maryland has since been reassigned to a position that prevents him from interacting with the public while the probe into his conduct continues.

The call came in on Sunday night after a hit-and-run crash. 38-year-old Rick Warrick and his 28-year-old fiancée, Julia Pearce had pulled off to the side of the road to change a front tire on their vehicle.

The couple was struck by a passing car and the driver sped off. Rick's two children were in the car at the time of the incident.

His teenage daughter called 911 to plead for help and describe what happened. The dispatcher was attempting to get the location and information about the situation but it wasn't easy because the teen was so upset.

The operator said, "OK, let's stop whining. OK, let's stop whining. It's
