USING THE WEB TO FURTHER THE CAUSE: ISIS VS USA
"Steven has no control over the actions of the US government. He's an innocent journalist. I have always learned that you, the caliph, can grant amnesty. I ask you to please release my child." The mother of American journalist Steven Sotloff who was taken hostage in northern Syria in summer 2013 made a desperate appeal on Wednesday. Addressing the leader of ISIS directly, she begs him to spare her son, as his captors have threatened to execute him if the United States continues its airstrikes on areas held by the extremist group.
ISIS is extremely active online, posting numerous messages over the past few days, saying they will decapitate Steven Sotloff if Washington does not end its airstrikes against the group. They have issued their warnings under the #StevensHeadinObamasHands hashtag, insisting they will kill the journalist if their demands are not met.
And while the keywords are mostly being used by members of ISIS to make threats against the US, some American web users have hijacked the hashtag, reminding the Jihadist group that Washington will not be intimidated by terrorists, and promising them a bitter battle until they concede…
