In South Africa, Ghana knocked the US out of the World Cup for the second time, thwarting any chance that Americans would care about soccer for another four years. But on Monday, the world's biggest super power finally got it's way for once, when the US beat Ghana 2-1 in both teams' first World Cup match in Brazil.
Ghana, the youngest team in competition, with most players still in training wheels, was shocked 29 seconds into the game by a lighting quick goal from American striker Clint Dempsey. The offense was apparently taken personally by Ghanaian defender John Boye, who attempted an amazing bicycle kick on an airball, which coincidentally was obstructed by Clint Dempsey's face. The American striker got a broken nose, but stayed in the game.
But most American viewers probably missed that rare moment of blood-on-grass, as they were sleeping during 80 scoreless minutes out of the middle of the game. Finally, Ghana's Andrew Ayew evened the score with just minutes to go, only to see the US score a second goal with 4 minutes left, sealing the deal for America.
The combination of a surprise victory for the US and games played in a compatible time zone might actually attract a few yankees to the beautiful game's side for a change; at least until the US is eliminated later this month and everyone goes back to watching NASCAR.
