Atlas rocket blasts off with secret U.S. military satellite

An unmanned rocket blasted off into space from Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida on Thursday morning (May 22).

The United Launch Alliance-built Atlas V (five) rocket launched at 9:09 a.m. EDT (1409GMT) atop a giant bed of smoke and fire.

Atlas V is carrying a NROL-33 classified satellite for the National Reconnaissance Office.

No specific information about the rocket's payload was released. The secretive National Reconnaissance Office designs, builds and operates the nation's fleet of spy satellites.
