Generally, we trust our community's police officers to keep us safe. However that blind trust factor is a reason why some scammers impersonate cops.

Investigators in New York City are currently searching for a man who targets elderly victims in an effort to get money from their bank accounts. The unidentifed suspect has been getting into the pockets of victims since 2011.

About two dozen people have been targeted thus far, ranging in age from 73 to 98 and all but one of them were women. Cops are considering it a phone scam.

The suspect reportedly calls his chosen victims, saying he’s a police officer investigating a case involving their bank accounts. The fake cop then tells the unsuspecting listeners that he needs money from those accounts to continue the investigation.

He arranged face to face meetings with the victims and walked away with large amounts of cash. The first was an 83-year-old lady who lives on the Upper West Side. She gave money to the suspect in the summer of 2011.

The scams have continued regularly for the past two years. The most recent incident involved a 77-year-old woman who was targeted just last month.
