Saying that too many high school aged girls are involved in adultery and prostitution, a school official in an Indonesian city has proposed they take a virginity test.

The city’s Education Agency Chief in the South Sumatra province asserts that the instances of such “negative acts” must be reduced and sees the testing as a path to that solution.

He included the testing costs in the 2014 budget proposal.

Shortly following his announcement, many who protested his plan came forward.

One woman said male students should be tested

Others equated the testing with child abuse given that it could cause long-term emotional damage.

The recommendation wasn’t received well among officials either.

An area education chief has gone on record as promising he will suggest the pursuit of the plan be dropped.

He went on to say, “There are many more important and useful things that need to be cared for rather than such a test. As students, they need to be nurtured more than be judged."

In 2010 a proposal along the same lines in a different province was thrown out.
