This song was inspired by the book 'Widow of the South' by Robert Hicks. The book tells the story of Carrie McGavock who owned a plantation during the American Civil War in the 1860's and how she eventually had almost 1,500 soldiers buried in her back yard.

Rather than let someone plow over the field where the soldiers lay, she had their remains removed with the help of friends and local people and reburied them in her own personal cemetery. The book gives a very graphic insight into the lives and harrowing deaths of soldiers on both sides and I felt moved to write this song.
