Matthew Chapter 28 recounts the resurrection of Jesus and His final instructions to His disciples. Early on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary go to the tomb. There is a great earthquake, and an angel of the Lord descends from heaven, rolls back the stone, and sits on it. The guards are so frightened that they become like dead men. The angel tells the women not to be afraid, for Jesus has risen, just as He said. The angel instructs them to go quickly and tell His disciples that He is risen from the dead and will meet them in Galilee.
As the women leave the tomb with fear and great joy to deliver the message, Jesus meets them and greets them. They worship Him, and Jesus reiterates the instruction to tell His disciples to go to Galilee, where they will see Him. Meanwhile, the guards report to the chief priests what has happened. The chief priests and elders bribe the soldiers to spread the false story that Jesus' disciples stole His body while the guards were asleep.
The eleven disciples go to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had directed them. When they see Jesus, they worship Him, but some doubt. Jesus then gives them the Great Commission, instructing them to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to observe all that He has commanded. Jesus concludes with a promise of His continual presence, saying, "I am with you always, even to the end of the age." This chapter highlights the triumph of Jesus' resurrection, His victory over death, and the commission to spread the Gospel to all nations.
