The China-Laos Railway is a key project under the Belt and Road Initiative. It's also a landmark in bilateral cooperation and a symbol of friendship between the two countries. As of June 2022, it is estimated to have transported well over 3 million passengers within China and Laos and around 4 million tonnes of freight. Let's witness how the China-Laos Railway has changed the lives of the people living along it.

01:29 while the event was attended in person
01:31 by the Laos prime minister and other high-ranking officials.
01:36 It was a historical moment, as it
01:38 was the biggest international railway the country ever had.
01:43 Somtse Lyaw Lyu was one of the train driver trainees selected
01:46 to report to the president of Laos.

05:57 The first railway link for Laos is a short 3.5 kilometer long railway track
06:03 connecting Nong Khai in Thailand and Van Thanh Lae in Laos.
06:07 The China-Laos railway is much longer.
06:11 Extending over 1,000 kilometers, it will link Kunming,
06:15 the provincial capital of China's Yunnan province,
06:18 with the Lao capital, Vientiane.
06:20 It is the biggest railway project that Laos has ever seen,
06:24 and it's part of an even bigger plan, the Trans-Asian Railway Network,
06:29 that could possibly extend all the way to Singapore.

18:03 The China-Laos railway took six years to complete.
18:08 And from an engineering point of view,
18:13 none of these tracks or bridges would be possible
18:16 without the successful construction of the Xinping Tunnel.
18:21 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
18:23 During the early phase of the project,
18:40 engineers knew this would be a big challenge.
18:43 It was no small feat.
18:45 The tunnel was going to be 15 kilometers long.
18:49 It could take two to three hours to walk from one end to the other.

21:34 Railways are still one of the best ways to transport people and goods over long distances.
21:41 It's cheaper than air and sea, faster than trucks.
21:46 The World Bank estimates that by 2030,
21:50 transit trade through Laos via railway could reach 3.9 million tons a year,
21:57 around 40% of that trade used to be transported by sea.
22:01 [MUSIC PLAYING]
22:04 To facilitate all that action, the railway must be maintained well
22:09 or risk resulting in faults that could lead to delays and economic losses.
