00:00:00This is ROH Midwest correspondent Dave Prazak. We are at intermission here in Dayton, Ohio.
00:00:04What a six-man mayhem matchup. We just saw Generation X securing their spots on the ROH roster.
00:00:10But the man joining me right now, CM Punk, you know we go way back, Punk.
00:00:15I know you very well, and this tonight, as you go for the world title, could very well be your biggest match in your career.
00:00:24What is going through your mind right now?
00:00:27Well, let's take a look at my career in Ring of Honor so far. Let's take a look at win-loss records.
00:00:32Not many of them have the greatest, but when it comes to big matches, as you say, Dave Prazak, the biggest match of my career tonight, I win big matches.
00:00:41Ask Cole Cabana. When I debuted here in Ring of Honor, we had a series of matches, and I came out on top.
00:00:47I always win the big one. Ask Raven, who's no longer here in Ring of Honor because of me.
00:00:52Big matches? How about January 10th, right here in Ohio? Ask Chris Daniels, who wins big matches.
00:00:59See, it doesn't matter how many losses I've had. It doesn't matter how many wins I've had, because right now, this is my first shot at the title.
00:01:06This is going to be my only shot at the title, because I'm going to win it. Samoa Joe's a great champion.
00:01:11But ask AJ Styles, who wins big matches. Ask Homicide, who has the killer instinct to pull out big matches.
00:01:20Everybody here in Ring of Honor knows I'm the MVP. I'm the man to beat.
00:01:25The people, they love Joe. The people have built Joe up, and Joe has built that title up. It means something.
00:01:31It's the biggest title in North America. Yeah, this is the biggest match of my career.
00:01:36And I'm going to pull it out. You see, what I do is crush the human spirit.
00:01:41And these people have built up Joe so big, there's nothing left for me to do but knock him off the mountain.
00:01:4714 months as champion, that's an accomplishment, but I'm going to take that belt places Joe could never go.
00:01:52Steamboat's out of my way. Daniels is out of my way. Raven is long gone.
00:01:57Everything I said I was going to do in Ring of Honor, I did. Everything everybody said that I wasn't going to do, I did.
00:02:02I win big matches. Ask the Briscos. Tonight is no different.
00:02:10So Samoa Joe, when I see you in that ring tonight, take a look at your belt.
00:02:15Kiss it goodbye, and wave goodbye to the people. You ain't going anywhere, but your belt is.
00:02:22And it's coming home with me.
00:02:25Thank you very much CM Punk. Let's send it now to Les Thatcher, standing by with the champion.
00:02:31Thanks Dave. And with me, of course, is the ROH World Champion, Samoa Joe.
00:02:36Joe, I know you're geared to go tonight, but first I want to make an announcement, which I think will be important to you as well.
00:02:41July the 17th in Elizabeth, New Jersey, Ring of Honor will be crowning a new pure wrestling champion because of AJ Styles being stripped of the title.
00:02:49I mean, no disrespect, but I got to tell you as well as I know, how many more mistakes is the Ring of Honor management going to make?
00:02:55I mean, it was a failed title the first time, and obviously it's going to be a failed title this time.
00:02:58The Ring of Honor pure championship will never be held in the same esteem as the ROH World Championship.
00:03:04And that's for one reason, and that's me. But enough about that, Les.
00:03:08Tonight, I'm facing a tremendous competitor in CM Punk, but Punk, you have to remember one thing.
00:03:1314 months, 19 men, none of them get it done.
00:03:17And you think tonight that you're going to? You're number 20, Punk. 20 on a list of men whose reputations speak for themselves.
00:03:23They said that AJ Styles would get it done. He didn't.
00:03:26They said that Christopher Daniels would get it done, and he didn't.
00:03:29They said that the notorious 187 Homicide would get it done, and he didn't.
00:03:33They've come from all over the world, Punk, and you think you got what it takes?
00:03:37I'll tell you what, they're knocking on my doorstep.
00:03:39One of the greatest professional wrestling companies in the world, New Japan Pro Wrestling, has called me out.
00:03:44Because they want to see if their men can take that belt from me.
00:03:46And CM Punk, you think you can take it tonight? You're sadly mistaken.
00:03:50Because there's one thing you need to remember.
00:03:53Les, always a pleasure to serve, but I'm Samoa Joe.
00:03:59I'm your Ring of Honor world champion.
00:04:02But most of all, I am pro wrestling, and I can't be beat.
00:04:06The words of the champion, Samoa Joe.
00:04:08Joe, we've got a great surprise for you tonight. I think you'll be excited about that.

00:09:14Go, Go, Go, Go, Go, Go, Go, Go, Go, Go, Go, Go, Go,
00:09:21Girl Goodbye
00:09:28Thank you Jim.
00:09:29Thank you everyone.
00:09:30I've got a presentation to make and I want to say it's an honor to be asked to do this.
00:09:36Samoa Joe, I've watched your career from the outset.
00:09:40with your talent, your intestinal fortitude, your bulldog tenacity.
00:09:45You have taken a regional title from Ring of Honor, and in 14 months,
00:09:50when titles aren't held that long any longer,
00:09:53you have turned it into a World Heavyweight title.
00:10:01And honoring Ring of Honor, I can tell you,
00:10:05that this justified them doing something.
00:10:09And what I have here, Jeff, would you mind holding the mic for me?
00:10:13Is the brand new Ring of Honor World Heavyweight title belt
00:10:19that I'd like to present to Samoa Joe on this night here in Dayton.
00:10:25And there's no doubt that the man who's earned it might get it out of his bag.
00:10:31There we go.
00:10:33But let's show this to everyone.
00:10:36This is the brand new Ring of Honor World Heavyweight title belt.
00:10:42How about a big hand for Samoa Joe?
00:11:00Joe, good luck to you.
00:11:02Mr. Puff, good luck to you. Gentlemen, have a great night.
00:11:05Thank you very much, Joe. Thank you, everyone.
00:11:08Thank you, Les Thatcher.
00:11:14And now introducing the opponent.
00:11:17He is from American Samoa.
00:11:20Weighing in at 270 pounds,
00:11:24he has held the title for 15 months.
00:11:28Defending in England, Germany, and the United States,
00:11:34he has kept the belt through 19 title defenses.
00:11:39Ladies and gentlemen, the reigning Ring of Honor World Heavyweight Champion,
00:11:46Samoa Joe!
00:11:58SAMOA JOE
00:12:28SAMOA JOE
00:12:52It's time for the match that the people paid to see.
00:12:55The world title is on the line.
00:12:58The champion, Samoa Joe, he's held that title since March of 2003.
00:13:04In there with the challenger, CM Punk.
00:13:07One half of the ROH Tag Team Champions.
00:13:10A man who earned this spot by pinning BJ Whitmer,
00:13:14the number two ranked guy in the top five rankings on 522.
00:13:18Punk pinned him that night to earn this title shot.
00:13:21And here we go, the first lock-up.
00:13:24CM Punk versus Samoa Joe.
00:13:26Punk's first title shot.
00:13:28Who's going to lead ROH in the future?
00:13:30We're going to find out now.
00:13:32I'm so thrilled to be here.
00:13:34This has big fight night in Vegas intensity and electricity in the crowd.
00:13:40The atmosphere here in Dayton is unbelievable.
00:13:43You have to be here live to experience something like this.
00:13:47Let's see if we get a clean break.
00:13:49Yes, we do.
00:13:50And a cocky break at that by CM Punk.
00:13:53It's interesting.
00:13:54The one guy that's not intimidated by Samoa Joe's track record is CM Punk,
00:14:00who believes that even though he's not the champion,
00:14:02and this is his first title match,
00:14:04that his record in big matches exceeds Samoa Joe's.
00:14:08CM Punk, he has met Samoa Joe in a non-title match.
00:14:12That was all the way back almost a year ago, August 16th,
00:14:15Bitter Friends Stick for Enemies.
00:14:17Both men going into that match, though,
00:14:20with probably about 50% to 75% as they both went uninjured,
00:14:24which is why it was non-title.
00:14:26But now we have him at 100%,
00:14:28although many argue that Samoa Joe is beaten and worn down
00:14:32from all those title defenses that he's had.
00:14:35And, of course, he was involved in that brutal match against Homicide
00:14:39just three weeks ago as that Homicide feud continues to rage.
00:14:43It takes your toll not only physically but mentally as well, Jimmy.
00:14:48It should be pointed out that when you're not the champion,
00:14:51whether you're a Homicide or you're a CM Punk or a BJ Whitmer
00:14:55or any of the other top stars here,
00:14:57if you lose early in the card,
00:15:00you've got two or three cards to come back and regain that momentum
00:15:05and get that title shot back.
00:15:07A loss hurts, but you can recover from it,
00:15:10whereas Samoa Joe has to be at his absolute best
00:15:13every time he steps in that ring to defend the title.
00:15:16He can't afford it off, Matt.
00:15:17He can't even afford the big mistake.
00:15:24This crowd in Dayton absolutely loving it in the early going
00:15:27as both men being pretty cautious.
00:15:29And you're right about what you were saying about Samoa Joe.
00:15:32And not only that, but this is a guy that has met the true elite
00:15:35and has defeated them all,
00:15:37from AJ Styles to Christopher Daniels to Paul London,
00:15:41Dan Moth, BJ Whitmer, Doug Williams,
00:15:45Xavier, the list goes on and on and on
00:15:49of all the men that Samoa Joe has faced and defeated for that title.
00:15:53Homicide on a couple of occasions.
00:15:55I mean, it's a who's who.
00:15:57It's an all-star list of talent.
00:15:59And after meeting that kind of opposition for as long as Joe has
00:16:03and such high pressure and high-profile matches,
00:16:06it's bound to take a physical toll on you.
00:16:09And a mental toll as well.
00:16:11And sometimes that mental exhaustion
00:16:13can hurt you more than the physical exhaustion.
00:16:16Now, this is going to be somewhat of a battle for the tempo here.
00:16:20If you're Samoa Joe, one of the things that impresses me about Samoa Joe
00:16:24is even though he's the champion,
00:16:27he wrestles a very aggressive style and a very offensive style.
00:16:30We heard Samoa Joe's interview earlier.
00:16:33This is a guy that even though he's got the championship
00:16:36still feels like he has something to prove.
00:16:38You know, he wants to face the best competition
00:16:42and he wants to dominate the competition.
00:16:44He never seems to want to just escape with the title.
00:16:48He wants to prove that his title means more than any other in wrestling.
00:16:51I think he wants a high-impact match.
00:16:54I think Samoa Joe's best match is one that has a lot of strikes in it.
00:16:58I think CM Punk's match, on the other hand,
00:17:01is a little bit more of a wrestling match.
00:17:04And right now they've been on the mat.
00:17:06I think if this match becomes a mat wrestling match,
00:17:09I think CM Punk may have the advantage.
00:17:11Samoa Joe does have that aggressive style, as you said.
00:17:14In fact, most of his matches he likes to get over in about 15 to 20 minutes.
00:17:18And he usually takes it to his opponent right from the onset.
00:17:21CM Punk has slowed him down as he is working that headlock right now.
00:17:25And it's only a matter of time until Joe explodes
00:17:28as Punk goes back to that headlock one more time.
00:17:31And real quick, Mark Multy, I do have to pay the bills.
00:17:34As I mentioned, Ring of Honor, a new era has begun

00:18:32ROHwrestling.com.
00:18:34And now let's get back to the match.
00:18:36After the match, Marcus, CM Punk continues to work that headlock.
00:18:40Snap suplex and a chop by Samoa Joe.
00:18:43Though notice earlier when Samoa Joe got to his feet,
00:18:46look how quickly CM Punk tried to take him back down.
00:18:49I think that's going to be your match in the early part of it.
00:18:52Now Samoa Joe's trying to take over the tempo
00:18:54with what we were talking about earlier.
00:18:56There's that aggressiveness coming out.
00:18:58And it's the strikes.
00:19:00He likes to use the strikes a lot more than CM Punk does.
00:19:03CM Punk paying the price as he is down in the corner.
00:19:06This is the Samoa Joe style we usually see with those strikes,
00:19:10with that aggressiveness, with that fast pace.
00:19:13Beautiful uppercuts there by Samoa Joe.
00:19:16Well, Samoa Joe usually has a size advantage in his matches,
00:19:19and he's very good about using it.
00:19:21And again, CM Punk wanting to control the tempo.
00:19:25Immediately grabs the side headlock, hip locks him back down to the mat.
00:19:29And notice the way CM Punk rides him with that headlock.
00:19:32He's not just applying pressure to the head and the neck,
00:19:35but he's making him carry that weight.
00:19:37270 pounds is a size advantage, but it also hurts your stamina.
00:19:43That's more weight that you have to support longer.
00:19:48Ref Hanson right on top of it
00:19:50to make sure that there's no choke involved.
00:19:52And right now CM Punk just squeezing at the head,
00:19:55and Joe might be getting a little desperate.
00:19:57Did you see him just go for the eyes of CM Punk?
00:20:00He's got to get out of this hold.
00:20:02Well, I'm not sure he was going for the eyes.
00:20:04I think he was just trying to bring the neck back.
00:20:06CM Punk, and again, trying to stay on that knee.
00:20:10Samoa Joe just so powerful as he tries to stand up
00:20:13and get out of that headlock.
00:20:15If nothing else, it gets CM Punk off of it.
00:20:17Samoa Joe, he's made that title a world title.
00:20:20He's defended in England and Germany,
00:20:22and he's face-to-face with CM Punk right now.
00:20:25Samoa Joe has made that title prestigious.
00:20:28Whoa, what a slap.
00:20:30Trying to taunt him into coming off the rope.
00:20:32I'm not sure this is what CM Punk wants to be doing
00:20:34with Samoa Joe.
00:20:36This is not the game that CM Punk wants to play.
00:20:40Another big shoulder block.
00:20:42Neither man going down.
00:20:45Now CM Punk...
00:20:50Oh, and he suckers Joe
00:20:53and knocks him down with that shoulder block.
00:20:56This is the first sucker punch of this match.
00:20:59And Joe gets just angered, that big Samoan.
00:21:03Tries to monkey flip Samoa Joe down.
00:21:05Samoa Joe's so big, tries to catch him with the crab.
00:21:08Rolls through the crab and gets a two-count.
00:21:10Arm drag by CM Punk.
00:21:12An arm drag by Samoa Joe.
00:21:15And look at CM Punk.
00:21:17Sweeps the leg.
00:21:19Now it's Samoa Joe sweeping the leg.
00:21:21And he goes for the kick, but Punk avoids it.
00:21:23What an electricity in this building.
00:21:26Jimmy, can I disagree with something you said a moment ago?
00:21:29Bill Free, Mark Nolte.
00:21:31I don't think that was a cheap shot.
00:21:33If Samoa Joe's just going to stand there
00:21:35and stick his chin out,
00:21:37I think CM Punk has every right to hit him with a forearm.
00:21:39You know, you're right about that.
00:21:41Perhaps I should have said the first aggressive strike
00:21:43by CM Punk of the match.
00:21:45Samoa Joe!
00:21:47Joe!
00:21:49Samoa Joe!
00:21:51Joe!
00:21:53Joe!
00:21:55This crowd in Dayton,
00:21:57showing their support for both men!
00:21:59We have a 50-50 crowd in this match.
00:22:01This crowd in Dayton showing their support for both men, we have a 50-50 crowd in this
00:22:15match.
00:22:16I'm not sure this is what CM Punk wants to be doing.
00:22:18He gave Samoa Joe a long time to get his breath.
00:22:22CM Punk was able to control this match early with the side headlock, and I know he doesn't
00:22:28And I know he doesn't want to go to a Greco-Roman knuckle lock, but he's going to take it.
00:22:33And he gets a kick to the hamstring, another one.
00:22:36Joe peppering him once again, slapping the face of CM Punk.
00:22:39And look at Punk just trying to cover up on the ropes there.
00:22:42And Joe trying to strike anywhere he can, the chin, the side of the face, and Punk is just covering up.
00:22:48And Punk now backing into the corner, Joe looking for any opening he can get.
00:22:54Now CM Punk comes up almost smiling.
00:22:57He was able to block all those classic cover-up positions.
00:23:01CM Punk, a lot of athletic background, a little bit of a boxing background.
00:23:06And he was trying to psych out Samoa Joe right there.
00:23:09CM Punk showing Samoa Joe, hey, you just tried to hit me with some of your best shots.
00:23:14And look, it did absolutely no damage.
00:23:16Definite mind game from the challenger.
00:23:18Boy, and I've got to wonder if it's a mind game here, asking again, once again, for that Greco-Roman knuckle lock.
00:23:24Because you know he's not going to outpower Samoa Joe.
00:23:27Samoa Joe looks like he's just kind of toying with him.
00:23:30CM Punk trying to use his forehead in there against the shoulder of Samoa Joe for leverage, but it's not working.
00:23:36Samoa Joe definitely outpowering the ROH Tag Team Champion.
00:23:42And right now he's just putting all that pressure on the wrists.
00:23:46You know, everybody that's done this before at one time or another,
00:23:49as children, knows how painful that position can be.
00:23:52CM Punk rolls out of it.
00:23:54Nice European style wrestling from CM Punk.
00:23:59Now CM Punk hammer lock.
00:24:03And Samoa Joe using that power just bulls him into the corner.
00:24:06Oh!
00:24:08And CM Punk does not cover up from those headbutts.
00:24:12Oh, those had to hurt. They have to take something out of Joe as well.
00:24:15And it's face wash time.
00:24:17What was CM Punk thinking at offering those Greco-Roman knuckle locks?
00:24:21Oh!
00:24:22Oh, CM Punk just saved himself and rolled out of the way
00:24:25as Samoa Joe is going for that running boot scrape.
00:24:28And CM Punk taking a breather.
00:24:32I think he has to here.
00:24:34Now there's no timeouts.
00:24:40Well, I think he had to because he was in serious trauma.
00:24:43If he'd hit that kick in the corner, it looked like he was setting up.
00:24:46This match could have been over.
00:24:49CM Punk, some words for the fans at ringside.
00:24:55And he better not be worried about the crowd.
00:24:59But you know one thing about CM Punk, he's always thinking.
00:25:02He's always manipulating. He always has a plan.
00:25:05And even if it seems like he might be distracted,
00:25:07you know that he's really setting forth what his next two or three moves are going to be in his head.
00:25:13Oh, and look at Joe catching him with that slap.
00:25:19Early in this match, CM Punk controlled the tempo.
00:25:22Now this is the match that Samoa Joe wants to wrestle.
00:25:25Samoa Joe going with those strikes, with those kicks.
00:25:28Punk, once again, just trying to cover up.
00:25:30Joe continuing to search for an opening.
00:25:35Of course, you can cover up.
00:25:37But when someone is hitting you as hard as Samoa Joe is,
00:25:41that takes its toll on you too.
00:25:45I hate to sound like the complete sports geek nerd,
00:25:47but Rocky Marciano, the great heavyweight champion from the 50s,
00:25:51the guys would cover up.
00:25:53Marciano would punch their arms so hard.
00:25:56And for so many times, their arms were hurt.
00:25:59They couldn't even raise their arms by the end of the match.
00:26:03Samoa Joe now, big chop to the back.
00:26:07And goes for the kick, but Punk grabs the leg of Joe.
00:26:10And look at that, Punk going back to the headlock.
00:26:14Jimmy, let me ask you a question.
00:26:15You've seen all of Samoa Joe's title defenses,
00:26:17and you've seen all of CM Punk's big matches.
00:26:20And what a resume by both wrestlers.
00:26:23Who has more impressive wins in ROH, CM Punk or Samoa Joe?
00:26:29You know, that's a good question, Mark.
00:26:31And as CM Punk unleashing those crossfaces,
00:26:33I'd have to say it's a tie.
00:26:35Samoa Joe definitely has a better one-loss record than CM Punk.
00:26:38But CM Punk wins the big match.
00:26:40He's done it time and time again.
00:26:42When it's on the line, CM Punk wins.
00:26:45He proved that in Chicago, when in the main event in his hometown,
00:26:48he won the tag team titles with a Pepsi plunge.
00:26:51And you know, he might have lost a couple matches for the old pure wrestling title,
00:26:55but that was definitely with debate about how the rules were interpreted.
00:26:59And CM Punk, he won the Raven feud.
00:27:02He won all the big matches of that feud.
00:27:04When it comes to a time for the big match, for the big one,
00:27:07CM Punk is a winner. There's no doubt about that.
00:27:09Meanwhile, those Samoa Joes put on classic title defense after classic title defense,
00:27:13always pulling out the victories,
00:27:15right when it seems like he's on the verge of defeat.
00:27:18So you're right there, even on both attempts.
00:27:21What a tale of the tech that we've got going into this title match.
00:27:24And look at Joe taking a breather here.
00:27:29You don't usually see the champion do that.
00:27:40Hey, don't worry about it.
00:27:58Yeah, that's great, but go do it to CM Punk.
00:28:01Now, Samoa Joe's just having fun out there right now, and the crowd's eating it up.
00:28:05Yeah, well, how much fun is he going to have
00:28:07when he gives CM Punk enough time to regain his composure,
00:28:10and CM Punk takes his title?
00:28:12You know what, Samoa Joe, though, Mark,
00:28:14he might have been trying some time there to regain his composure,
00:28:17as nothing Samoa Joe's done so far has really worked.
00:28:26And now Punk, punking out his own fan.
00:28:30That guy's had better days.
00:28:33Sorry to cut you off before there, Mark.
00:28:38And CM Punk jumps up again, grabs the side headlock.
00:28:43You know, tosses him to the mat,
00:28:45and again, they're fighting for control of the tempo.
00:28:50CM Punk, using that headlock throughout this match so far,
00:28:54using it for a couple purposes.
00:28:56One, it slows down the pace,
00:28:58definitely taking Samoa Joe down.
00:29:01Definitely taking Samoa Joe out of his normal routine,
00:29:04his normal game plan by slowing down that pace.
00:29:07And although you're not going to win a match with a side headlock,
00:29:10it does wear down your opponent,
00:29:12it does restrict that blood flow to the head,
00:29:15and it does make you groggy,
00:29:17and it could play into the later stages of this match.
00:29:20Well, especially when you apply it from a prone position,
00:29:23and you're laying on the guys that...
00:29:25He's carrying CM Punk's 220 pounds on his chest.
00:29:29And Samoa Joe goes for the big move there,
00:29:32and again, CM Punk not being baited
00:29:35into the exchange of the high-impact moves,
00:29:37goes right back to the rear chinlock,
00:29:39and again, when he makes Samoa Joe
00:29:42carry his weight on his back like that,
00:29:44it collapses the lungs and the ribcage,
00:29:47making it harder for Samoa Joe to get oxygen.
00:29:50You notice something else, Mark?
00:29:52When Joe tried to pick up the pace,
00:29:54Punk immediately slowed it back down
00:29:56by going to that chinlock,
00:29:58which does many of the same things that the side headlock does.
00:30:01Absolutely.
00:30:03CM Punk obviously had a master game plan
00:30:06going into this one, slowing the champion down.
00:30:09Well, you can't play into the champion's strengths.
00:30:12You can't put your head in the lion's mouth,
00:30:14and if you're gonna sit there
00:30:16and try to trade shots with Samoa Joe,
00:30:18you're going to lose.
00:30:19And the world champion now unleashing,
00:30:21and he gets that kick finally,
00:30:23goes for the knee, Punk tries to roll out of the way,
00:30:25but Joe connects, cover!
00:30:28Ref Hanson just a two-count.
00:30:31Look at Samoa Joe, though.
00:30:33I wonder if we're starting to see
00:30:35some of the effects of those chinlocks and headlocks.
00:30:38Samoa Joe looks like his breathing's becoming
00:30:40just a little bit labored.
00:30:42That chest definitely heaving a little bit more.
00:30:45Samoa Joe unleashing some of those
00:30:47high-impact strikes and kicks on CM Punk,
00:30:50and it's not slowing Punk down
00:30:51as he blocks that vertical suplex attempt.
00:30:54This is the point where Samoa Joe
00:30:56usually goes in for the kill.
00:30:57It'll be interesting to see if he can go for it here.
00:31:00Lifts him up with a vertical suplex.
00:31:15And he lets the blood rush to Punk's head
00:31:18as the fans count to 20.
00:31:20And Samoa Joe, though, a little bit slow
00:31:22following up the advantage.
00:31:26And that has to be due to the headlock.
00:31:28There's the cover, hooks the back leg.
00:31:30CM Punk rolls the shoulder.
00:31:35I see a look of frustration
00:31:36in the eye of the world champion right now.
00:31:39Most of his matches are normally over by now.
00:31:42And right now, we're not seeing Samoa Joe
00:31:45as aggressive as we saw him 10 minutes ago.
00:31:49As he's trying those strikes again,
00:31:51striking Punk in the corner.
00:31:53Punk once again covering up.
00:31:55Letting Joe take those swings
00:31:57and just trying to protect himself in the meantime.
00:32:00And those swings and punches and strikes,
00:32:03they don't have behind it
00:32:04what they normally have on a finger to the eye
00:32:07cuts off Joe.
00:32:08And a side headlock by Punk once again.
00:32:11And Jimmy, you brought it up earlier,
00:32:13the frustration level.
00:32:15And you saw frustration level there
00:32:17as he took a second to argue with the referee
00:32:19that gave CM Punk the opening.
00:32:22Very interesting strategy by CM Punk
00:32:24as he continually lets Joe strike him,
00:32:27covering up and negating the effectiveness
00:32:30of those strikes.
00:32:31A lot of people saw the Spike Lee movie
00:32:34about Muhammad Ali and the thrill in Manila.
00:32:38You had George Foreman,
00:32:40who was the most dominant heavyweight of that era,
00:32:43who was beating everybody within three rounds,
00:32:45knocked Joe Frazier out in two rounds.
00:32:47Nobody gave Muhammad Ali a chance.
00:32:49Ali went into that like a 10 to 1 underdog.
00:32:52Thought that Ali was well over the hill,
00:32:54well past his prime,
00:32:55and couldn't hang with the power of George Foreman.
00:32:58But Ali went in there,
00:32:59was willing to absorb that brutal beating
00:33:01by covering up on the ropes.
00:33:03He called it the Ropa Dough
00:33:05and let Foreman punch himself out.
00:33:07You don't think CM Punk's trying to do that here.
00:33:10I have seen enough of Samoa Joe
00:33:12to know that that's probably a pretty good strategy
00:33:14because you're not going to trade shots with him and win.
00:33:17Wow, what a genius strategy by CM Punk,
00:33:20taking a page out of history right there.
00:33:23And it would work for Ali.
00:33:26It could work for CM Punk right here
00:33:28as Joe is tired and he is absorbing those chops.
00:33:32Now the question is,
00:33:33can CM Punk put Samoa Joe away?
00:33:36Because Jimmy, you've seen a lot of both of these guys to know
00:33:40they can both take a punch.
00:33:43And Joe looks tired, he looks fatigued.
00:33:46And CM Punk's beginning to dominate with some offense here.
00:33:49Let's see if he can do it.
00:33:51Let's see if he can keep it going.
00:33:53And he is just choking the world champion in the corner with that boot.
00:33:56Ref Hanson called for the break.
00:33:58Again, lurking on the oxygen of the champion.
00:34:01If you can't breathe, you can't win.
00:34:05Joe's trying to fire back.
00:34:06Both men going toe to toe.
00:34:08Joe getting the advantage on Punk with those strikes.
00:34:11Punk goes down.
00:34:12And this time Punk goes out of the ring
00:34:14but he grabs the leg of Samoa Joe,
00:34:16pulls him out.
00:34:17And I'm not sure this is where CM Punk wants to be with Joe.
00:34:20Absolutely not.
00:34:23Joe continually peppering Punk
00:34:25with those slaps, with that forearm.
00:34:31And another headbutt. Punk is down.
00:34:33Nowhere for Punk to go.
00:34:35Of course, there are no count outs here at ROH.
00:34:37The referee can disqualify you if you're on the floor for too long.
00:34:41But I got a feeling they're going to be out there for about a half an hour
00:34:44for Ref Hanson to stop this one.
00:34:47And Punk takes that steal.
00:34:50And he's also holding his knee.
00:34:51I think his knee hit the guardrail on that flip.
00:34:55And Joe taking a breather and stomping,
00:34:58just bracing that foot and insulting way on the face of CM Punk.
00:35:02He's almost using CM Punk's strategy there.
00:35:05He's slowing the tempo down
00:35:07and he's trying to take the oxygen away from CM Punk.
00:35:11And you know what could be coming up.
00:35:13The fans could be calling for it.
00:35:15No! No oleole kick as Punk changes the momentum one more time.
00:35:19Got to get back in the ring.
00:35:21You're not going to win the exchanges out on the floor.
00:35:28And let's see what Punk has in mind.
00:35:30He's not going to oleole kick Joe, is he?
00:35:32Oh, this is such a bad idea.
00:35:34You cannot, if you're the challenger,
00:35:36you cannot win the title on the floor.
00:35:40Oh, Joe got up and Punk saw it.
00:35:42Punk scurries back into the ring.
00:35:44That's where he needs to be.
00:35:47Everyone in this building and Dayton is on their feet
00:35:51as they are watching this world title match develop.
00:35:55And this has turned into a chess match.
00:36:08This 50-50 crowd once again voicing their opinion
00:36:11with that let's go Punk, let's go Joe chant.
00:36:15And both these men are feeling that adrenaline from the crowd.
00:36:18They're coming face to face in the middle of the ring.
00:36:21Joe with that kick, Punk the drive with kicks.
00:36:25CM Punk is not going to get the better of those exchanges.
00:36:28And Punk once again retreats into the corner
00:36:30but this time he's unable to cover up and protect himself
00:36:33from those big knees and that palm strike.
00:36:37Well, that was completely unprotected.
00:36:39CM Punk turns around,
00:36:40checks to see if there's still a nose on his face.
00:36:44And Joe definitely beginning to sense
00:36:46that he's got the momentum in his favor.
00:36:48Let's see if he can follow up.
00:36:50I think he needs to try to finish him off right here.
00:36:53No doubt about that, Mark Nolte.
00:36:54He needs to get this over and done with.
00:36:57And Punk flips into the corner and he's stuck there.
00:37:00He tries to get up, yes.
00:37:02Oh, and Joe nails him with a forearm.
00:37:07Punk is down on the floor.
00:37:10And Samoa Joe is just sitting in the ring waiting for him.
00:37:18Tope!
00:37:19Looks like Joe got tired of waiting.
00:37:22A 270 pound Tope Suicida by the ROH champion.
00:37:27And that is what makes this man a world champion.
00:37:30He is as agile as they come.
00:37:32Never mind the fact that he's a big man
00:37:34that does not affect his mobility one bit
00:37:37as he wrestles like a 150 pounder or Special K.
00:37:40And he'll certainly put his body on the line
00:37:43the same way a 150 pounder will.
00:37:45But look at his right knee.
00:37:47He is favoring it.
00:37:49Let's see if he can put weight on it as he stands here.
00:37:52Well, they're called high risk movers for a reason
00:37:54because even if you score,
00:37:56you still hold a chance of hurting yourself.
00:37:58This is what I meant earlier, Jimmy,
00:38:00when I said even though he's the champion,
00:38:02he wrestles as a challenger sometimes.
00:38:06And it's ole-ole kick time.
00:38:18And Punk stops.
00:38:20He stops Joe right in his tracks with that back elbow.
00:38:24Punk avoiding the ole-ole kick.
00:38:26Goes for a run of karate.
00:38:28Joe catches him, though.
00:38:30Oh, Punk hard into that steel.
00:38:33CM Punk may be out.
00:38:35CM Punk may be out.
00:38:37Give CM Punk credit.
00:38:39He tried to control the tempo of this match
00:38:42for as long as he can.
00:38:44But Samoa Joe, so powerful, so aggressive,
00:38:48so physically dominating with those strikes
00:38:51that once he gets the advantage,
00:38:53it's like trying to stop a freight train.
00:38:55Look at the gut of Samoa Joe
00:38:57and the chest heaving as he tries to get his breath.
00:39:00And he was unable to follow up.
00:39:03Uh-oh, he's going to follow up now.
00:39:09But he's moving a little bit,
00:39:11a step slower than we normally see him moving.
00:39:16And he scores with the ole-ole kick that time,
00:39:19taking the face off of CM Punk.
00:39:22I wouldn't be surprised if that bumped to the nose.
00:39:26Needs to get him up.
00:39:28Needs to get him in the ring.
00:39:30CM Punk, I think, needs to finish this match.
00:39:37He could be going for another ole-ole kick.
00:39:40Right now, Samoa Joe is just toying with the challenger.
00:39:47And he connects again.
00:39:49That's got to be it.
00:39:51I don't know if I've ever seen anybody kick out
00:39:54after getting hit with two ole-ole kicks.
00:39:57Samoa Joe needs to get CM Punk in the ring.
00:40:00He needs to go for the Island Driver,
00:40:02the Muscle Buster, or the Choke.
00:40:04That's how he wins the majority of his matches.
00:40:07And he has Punk in a position to score
00:40:09with one of those moves right now.
00:40:14Do you think it kind of bothers Samoa Joe
00:40:16that the crowd was 50-50?
00:40:18Do you think this might be what this is about a little bit?
00:40:21Or perhaps the fact that CM Punk
00:40:23controlled the tempo of this match.
00:40:26And there's another ole-ole kick.
00:40:28Samoa Joe just punishing the challenger.
00:40:33That face has just got to be crushed.
00:40:37And look at the pain on the face of CM Punk.
00:40:40Samoa Joe back in the ring.
00:40:42And I would think that Samoa Joe
00:40:44would want to get CM Punk back in the ring immediately
00:40:47so he could try to capitalize on this situation.
00:40:50I'm a little bit surprised, too.
00:40:52You would think after that
00:40:54he'd just be able to roll him into the ring
00:40:56and just a simple cover and hook in the leg
00:40:59would get the win.
00:41:01Now CM Punk knows that there is no count-out.
00:41:05CM Punk staggering.
00:41:07Struggling to get into the ring.
00:41:09Can he pull himself in?
00:41:11He has taken quite a beating so far.
00:41:13How many of those blows, those strikes,
00:41:15those kicks from Samoa Joe registered earlier?
00:41:18We do know that those three ole-ole kicks
00:41:20registered big time.
00:41:22But the world champion slow to follow up
00:41:24as CM Punk pulls himself to his feet.
00:41:28But he looks in no condition to fire
00:41:30any kind of offense right now.
00:41:32CM Punk might be at the mercy of the world champion.
00:41:36Samoa Joe may be actually smart
00:41:38in not just bull-washing CM Punk.
00:41:40How so caged he could have been playing possum.
00:41:42And he was.
00:41:44CM Punk lands on his feet.
00:41:46A burst of energy.
00:41:48Oh, he gets driven through the mat
00:41:50with that sidewalk slam though.
00:41:53Now Samoa Joe is starting to feel it.
00:41:56Crosses over for the cover.
00:41:58Hooks the back leg.
00:42:00Only a two count.
00:42:02The challenger kicking out.
00:42:04You know, staring at the referee
00:42:06is not going to turn that into a three count.
00:42:08You're not going to win the argument with the referee.
00:42:10Follow up the advantage. Win the match.
00:42:13You know, about 15 or 20 minutes ago
00:42:15I noted that everyone in this building
00:42:17was on their feet.
00:42:18They have yet to sit down.
00:42:20As Joe unloading with that drop and punch combo.
00:42:23Punk unable to cover up.
00:42:25Thump that down in the corner.
00:42:27There's the face wash again.
00:42:29Oh, so brutal, so aggressive.
00:42:31Joe hits the ropes.
00:42:33And connects with a running boot scrape this time.
00:42:36The champion is dominating.
00:42:38This is the world champion that we know.
00:42:41This is the Samoa Joe that has kept the belt
00:42:43since March of 2003.
00:42:46Against top challengers from all over the world.
00:42:49If this was a boxing match
00:42:51the referee would have stopped it.
00:42:53CM Punk out on his feet.
00:42:55I have no idea why he's still conscious.
00:42:58Look at CM Punk though, pulling himself
00:43:00using the top rope to get to his feet.
00:43:02Only to get taken down by Joe
00:43:04who's now squeezing the head of CM Punk with his legs.
00:43:08And this is almost a sleeper at this point.
00:43:11You know, if he could get that thigh
00:43:14across the carotid artery.
00:43:16And especially with all the damage
00:43:18that CM Punk has taken.
00:43:20Joe has proven he can get that choke
00:43:22from numerous different positions.
00:43:24Including using a triangle choke
00:43:26or a triangle arm bar like he did
00:43:28against Matt Straker in Chicago
00:43:30to get victories.
00:43:32So CM Punk definitely has to beware
00:43:34of those different moves in the arsenal
00:43:36of Samoa Joe.
00:43:40And look at Punk turning it over.
00:43:42And he gets out of the hole and traps Joe.
00:43:45Now Punk needs to keep this hold on for a while.
00:43:49Joe is in the ropes.
00:43:51Raph Hansen right on top of it
00:43:53calling for the break.
00:43:55Right now CM Punk needs to stick and move
00:43:57as much as he can.
00:43:59He needs to try to stay away from Samoa Joe
00:44:01and try to get the cobwebs back.
00:44:03Try to clear his head.
00:44:05And Samoa Joe giving him no chance at that
00:44:07as he follows Punk into the corner
00:44:09with a pair of forearms and a headbutt.
00:44:11Once again though those forearms
00:44:13don't have what they normally do behind it.
00:44:15Perhaps that rope-a-dope technique by Punk
00:44:17paying off. Punk now with a burst of energy
00:44:19goes airborne. Scores with that crossbody.
00:44:22The champion is down.
00:44:24Punk grasping at those ribs.
00:44:26What endurance CM Punk is showing right here.
00:44:29Taking all that abuse and still firing back.
00:44:32Don't count the challenger out.
00:44:34I've seen CM Punk take some brutal beatings.
00:44:37I've seen him take a brutal beating from Raven.
00:44:39I thought Raven was going to kill him.
00:44:41And CM Punk figured out a way to come back
00:44:43and win that match.
00:44:45Both of these wrestlers have one thing in common.
00:44:47They both have the ability to absorb
00:44:49an abnormal amount of punishment.
00:44:51And Samoa Joe trying to fire himself up
00:44:54after those kicks by Punk.
00:44:56Joe gets to his feet.
00:44:58Punk puts him down with a big boot.
00:45:00Cover!
00:45:02Didn't have the presence of mind
00:45:04of hooking that back leg.
00:45:06And sometimes that's not a mistake
00:45:08as much as when you've taken the punishment
00:45:10that CM Punk has.
00:45:12That's why you don't have the presence of mind
00:45:14of grabbing the back leg.
00:45:15But you know what CM Punk does have the presence
00:45:17of mind to do?
00:45:18And now he's grabbed the chin lock again.
00:45:20Trying to wear down the world champion.
00:45:23Most of Joe's title matches
00:45:25go about 15-20 minutes.
00:45:27I don't think he's ever had a match for over 25 minutes.
00:45:30So right now Joe is on uncharted territory.
00:45:33CM Punk might be one move away from scoring a victory
00:45:36as he does that Russian leg sweep.
00:45:38Now trying to tie up the legs of Samoa Joe.
00:45:41But those massive legs are just too big.
00:45:43CM Punk having a little bit of trouble there.
00:45:45But yes, hold on.
00:45:47It looks like he might have to hold cinched.
00:45:49Looks like he wants to try for the cross-legged submission.
00:45:53And now he's pushing at that knee of Joe
00:45:55applying the pressure.
00:45:57And if he can take Joe's legs out from underneath him
00:45:59at this point of the match
00:46:01we're gonna have a new world champion.
00:46:03And remember earlier
00:46:05when he hit that sumo cina tope
00:46:07that he landed on his knee.
00:46:09And that's the knee that Punk's working on now.
00:46:13Joe firing back with those chops
00:46:15to the chest of CM Punk.
00:46:17And Punk unfazed
00:46:19keeps the hold on.
00:46:21The challenger just absorbing a brutal beating.
00:46:23And while absorbing that beating
00:46:25the champion is getting worn down.
00:46:28Punk firing back with those forearms.
00:46:30Little to no effect.
00:46:31Joe pays him back with a slap.
00:46:34See, I wouldn't even worry about the forearms.
00:46:36Just keep the pressure on the knee.
00:46:39Well, there was an extreme look of pain
00:46:41on the face of Samoa Joe.
00:46:43That knee definitely getting worn down there.
00:46:45Punk needs to watch his shoulders.
00:46:49And this is also giving CM Punk an opportunity
00:46:52to clear the cobwebs
00:46:54and recover from that brutal beating
00:46:56he took on the outside
00:46:58with those three ole ole kicks.
00:47:00You don't want to headbutt the world champion.
00:47:02And now Joe paying Punk back with a series of headbutts.
00:47:05Ah, absolutely brutal!
00:47:07Headbutts, ah, one after another.
00:47:09And that's going to take something out of both men
00:47:11but more out of the challenger.
00:47:13Maybe the biggest mistake by CM Punk
00:47:15in this match to this point.
00:47:17This crowd still on their feet.
00:47:19Look at the faces of all those people
00:47:21wooed on the ring.
00:47:22They are witnessing a classic
00:47:24and a potential new champion right now.
00:47:26As I could not pick a winner in this one.
00:47:29Well, I put my money on Samoa Joe
00:47:31because CM Punk is still out on his feet.
00:47:33Looks like he might be going for the abdominal stretch.
00:47:36Simple and effective at this point.
00:47:38Ah, Jack Briscoe would be proud.
00:47:40That's how you apply the abdominal stretch.
00:47:42You plant both feet, lock the arms
00:47:44now drop into the ladder.
00:47:46Guillotine hooking the front leg.
00:47:50Yeah, Samoa Joe
00:47:52is a master of strikes, but make no mistake
00:47:54Samoa Joe can wrestle.
00:47:56You know, that's a great technical wrestling move.
00:47:59Standing guillotine, also known as an abdominal stretch
00:48:01turned into a pinning combination
00:48:03by dropping it into the lateral guillotine.
00:48:06And also, notice the way
00:48:08that he hooked the hands on the abdominal stretch
00:48:11to put more pressure on the ribs
00:48:13and at the same time kept both feet planted
00:48:15so he'd have a good base.
00:48:17Beautifully done.
00:48:19And those chops right there
00:48:21putting both men down.
00:48:23And CM Punk
00:48:25struggling to his feet.
00:48:28Comes off and scores with that knee
00:48:30to the head of Samoa Joe.
00:48:32And I think at this point of the match
00:48:34that one move could finish off either man.
00:48:36They are so worn down, so tired
00:48:38so beaten up at this point
00:48:40and especially Samoa Joe
00:48:42who usually doesn't go this long in matches
00:48:44if CM Punk scores on one high impact move
00:48:46it could be all over.
00:48:48We could have a new world champion.
00:48:50Well, I also think both men at this point
00:48:52are questioning themselves.
00:48:54Both men have done
00:48:56what they've needed to do to win this match.
00:48:58Both men have hit what they've needed to hit
00:49:00that would have beaten any other opponent.
00:49:02They've won matches
00:49:04doing less to other opponents.
00:49:06Yet, this match is still going.
00:49:08I think Samoa Joe in particular
00:49:10has to be questioning himself.
00:49:12Three devastating ole-ole kicks.
00:49:14A couple of pinfalls.
00:49:16Joe kicks out of both of them.
00:49:18That time he hooks the top wrist lock
00:49:20to try to secure
00:49:22the pinning combination.
00:49:24But what is Samoa Joe thinking to himself
00:49:26at this moment?
00:49:28Well, right now CM Punk has got to be
00:49:30thinking about taking the worn down world champion
00:49:32and hitting the Pepsi Plunge
00:49:34if he's able to do that.
00:49:36This match is definitely over
00:49:38and we will have a new world champion
00:49:40and right now Samoa Joe is fatigued.
00:49:42He's tired enough
00:49:44so CM Punk might be able to get him
00:49:46in a position for that Pepsi Plunge.
00:49:48Well, if you're going to
00:49:50hook the front leg you've got to
00:49:52cross the body on the pinning combination.
00:49:56Now we're seeing both guys
00:49:58their level of frustration is increasing.
00:50:00You have to wonder if this match
00:50:02is going to break down into a brawl at some point
00:50:04because I think both men
00:50:06are questioning exactly what it is
00:50:08they need to do to win the match.
00:50:10CM Punk assaulting the world champion by mocking him
00:50:12and that did nothing more than piss off Joe
00:50:14and give him an adrenaline burst
00:50:16as he connects with a big enziguri
00:50:18and a big back suplex.
00:50:20I'm telling you right now
00:50:22the mustard fell off the hot dog.
00:50:24If you've got Samoa Joe hurt enough
00:50:26if you have enough time to drop
00:50:28into a double bicep you have time enough
00:50:30to try to hook a leg.
00:50:34CM Punk maybe getting a little bit too smart
00:50:36for his own good with those mind games.
00:50:38Both men down now.
00:50:40Punk once again trying to pull himself up
00:50:42with those ropes using every last ounce
00:50:44of strength he has to get to his feet.
00:50:46The world champion kneeling on all fours
00:50:48now trying to get to his feet
00:50:50with his last bit of energy and strength.
00:50:52Both men connect with clotheslines
00:50:54roaring forward.
00:50:56Cover!
00:50:58Two and seven eights.
00:51:02Nothing but the power and the guts
00:51:04of Samoa Joe saves the ROH title.
00:51:07I promise you he rolled that shoulder
00:51:09on pure instinct.
00:51:11Can CM Punk follow it up?
00:51:13He's unleashing those forearms
00:51:15and notice this time Joe is not fighting back.
00:51:17Punk hitting the ropes.
00:51:19A sleeper hold!
00:51:21And this is where that headlock
00:51:23and the chinlock from before
00:51:25those moves have worn down
00:51:27Samoa Joe for this very sleeper hold.
00:51:29But the punishment that CM Punk takes
00:51:31he's having a harder time
00:51:33getting that locked in.
00:51:36He needs to get that forearm
00:51:38across the carotid artery.
00:51:40And look at the way that Samoa Joe
00:51:42is turning his head.
00:51:44That's how you fight the sleeper
00:51:46you keep trying to turn sideways.
00:51:48And CM Punk not able to get Joe
00:51:50off his base either.
00:51:52Joe back on his feet
00:51:54but once again CM Punk applies
00:51:56that sleeper hold.
00:51:58If CM Punk could get Joe off his feet
00:52:00the champion might pass out
00:52:02from this move.
00:52:05But he's keeping that head turned
00:52:07he's not able to get that forearm
00:52:09all the way underneath the carotid artery.
00:52:11Samoa Joe has to get back up
00:52:13to his feet and like you said
00:52:15CM Punk has to get this hold stitched in.
00:52:19Wow what genius plan by CM Punk
00:52:21using that headlock
00:52:23using the chinlock to wear down Joe
00:52:25and now he's got the world champion
00:52:27down with the sleeper hold.
00:52:31And Joe somehow gets to his feet
00:52:33back elbows, Punk relinquishes the hold
00:52:35goes for it again, there's the choke!
00:52:37No, Punk out of the choke
00:52:39applies the sleeper hold one more time.
00:52:41We could have a new world champion
00:52:43this crowd in Dane senses it
00:52:45the champion is down.
00:52:47This is when the sleeper hold is most effective
00:52:49when you've gone long into the match
00:52:51and when as Jimmy has
00:52:53we've talked about several times
00:52:55when you force the oxygen out of the lungs
00:52:57with headlocks and chinlocks.
00:52:59Samoa Joe is close to those ropes
00:53:01but look at him he is going limp
00:53:03the world champion is going limp
00:53:05he needs to reach those ropes
00:53:07he needs to get out of this hold in a hurry
00:53:09but even if he does he might be out on his feet.
00:53:11The world champion
00:53:13showing signs of life
00:53:15trying to keep movement going in his body
00:53:17and not go out to the sleeper hold
00:53:19but CM Punk hasn't locked in.
00:53:21Joe trying everything he can
00:53:23trying to shake it off
00:53:25trying to keep himself awake
00:53:27and now Punk forced to go to the chinlock
00:53:29but Joe gets to his feet
00:53:31and scores with the enziguri
00:53:33to save the world title.
00:53:35That was not only an enziguri
00:53:37it was a 180 degree enziguri
00:53:39Samoa Joe
00:53:41that was a desperation move Chris
00:53:43Samoa Joe felt the title slipping away
00:53:45that was his version of the big roundhouse
00:53:47that he hopes to connect.
00:53:49That was a puncher's chance
00:53:51taking that one last chance
00:53:53before he lost the title
00:53:55and he scores.
00:53:57And CM Punk intelligently
00:53:59rolls under the ropes
00:54:01so that Joe could not go for a pinfall.
00:54:03How can a man that big
00:54:05do a 180 degree enziguri?
00:54:07That's the agility
00:54:09that makes him a world champion
00:54:11now Joe with a backbreaker
00:54:13he's got those legs
00:54:15trying to turn it around into that Boston grab
00:54:17we've seen Joe do so many times
00:54:19Punk fighting it with every ounce of strength he has
00:54:21and Joe trying to twist
00:54:23and yes he turns it over
00:54:25and he has that knee
00:54:27buried into the spine of the lower back of CM Punk
00:54:29at the same time
00:54:31ripping at that knee
00:54:33pulling up on those legs
00:54:35tearing at the ligaments and tendons of the knee
00:54:37while twisting the spine of CM Punk
00:54:39and now he really has it
00:54:41cinched in deep.
00:54:43If you get your leverage
00:54:45underneath the legs
00:54:47he can't power out with his legs
00:54:49and Samoa Joe knows that
00:54:51that's how you keep someone from powering out
00:54:53from underneath the Boston grab
00:54:55Punk gets to the ropes
00:54:57Punk with his last bit of intestinal fortitude
00:54:59clutches at the bottom rope
00:55:01forcing Russ Hansen
00:55:03to tell Samoa Joe to break the hold
00:55:05and the world champion
00:55:07looks frustrated
00:55:09Oh both these men are frustrated
00:55:11CM Punk thought he had the match
00:55:13one with the sleeper
00:55:15Samoa Joe thought he had the match
00:55:17one with the ole ole kicks
00:55:19and then later on with that Boston grab
00:55:21both men have done what they needed to do
00:55:23to win the match
00:55:25but we're still going
00:55:27and I think right now
00:55:29both men have to be questioning
00:55:31exactly what it is they have to do
00:55:33Punk back in the corner
00:55:35and Joe unleashing those kicks on Punk
00:55:37Punk in a very familiar spot in this match
00:55:39in that corner
00:55:41absorbing blows and kicks
00:55:43and Samoa Joe who runs in with a knee
00:55:45I'm surprised to see him make a charge
00:55:47Samoa Joe's gotta be so tired
00:55:49and it takes so much energy
00:55:51to make a charge like that
00:55:53and that can turn into such a mistake
00:55:55if Punk can move out of the way
00:55:57maybe Samoa Joe is going for that knockout blow
00:55:59he might figure that's his only chance
00:56:01as he plants CM Punk on the top rope
00:56:03Samoa Joe
00:56:05and actually both men
00:56:07both Samoa Joe and CM Punk
00:56:09moving a beat slower now
00:56:13I'm not sure what the time is in this match
00:56:15but this match is easily by far
00:56:17the longest single world title match
00:56:19in ROH history
00:56:21and this crowd in Dayton
00:56:23has yet to sit down
00:56:25what an electricity in this building
00:56:27I'm standing, you're standing
00:56:29everyone in this building is
00:56:31what an effort received by both men
00:56:33this is history
00:56:41Punk perched on the top rope
00:56:43drops an elbow
00:56:47cover
00:56:49can't hook the leg
00:56:53oh that could have been it
00:56:55right now Samoa Joe
00:56:57he's not thinking about his issues with
00:56:59Homicide and the Rottweilers
00:57:01CM Punk, he's not thinking about
00:57:03Ricky the Dragon Stebo
00:57:05who he put out at the last show in Philadelphia
00:57:07that's why Stebo's not here tonight
00:57:09both men are focused on the richest prize
00:57:11in ROH, the world title
00:57:14now CM Punk is going to put
00:57:16Samoa Joe on the top rope
00:57:20he might be trying to set up for the Pepsi Plunge
00:57:22Joe not quite in position for it
00:57:24Punk trying to wear down
00:57:26Joe Moore with those forearms
00:57:28this could be that big home run swing
00:57:30that either man needs to win the match
00:57:32and Punk is going for it right here
00:57:34he's going for it all
00:57:36both men struggling on the top
00:57:38Punk now getting his balance
00:57:40getting control
00:57:42the world champion
00:57:46Dunson with the back suplex
00:57:48if Punk could get the cover
00:57:50it could be all over
00:57:52does he have the energy
00:57:54I think that took as much out of Punk as it did Samoa Joe
00:57:56especially when you're having to deal
00:57:58with 270 pounds of dead weight
00:58:00and trying to position that on the top rope
00:58:08the crowd counting along with Ref Hanson
00:58:10a little count out right here
00:58:12I wouldn't be surprised if neither man
00:58:14could beat the tag count
00:58:16I've seen some great long matches in my time
00:58:20I saw Nick Bockwinkel
00:58:22and Kurt Hennig go 60 minutes
00:58:24on ESPN
00:58:26the most famous wrestling match in the history of ESPN
00:58:28I've got videotape at wrestlingclassics.com
00:58:30of some of those tremendous
00:58:32Jack Briscoe vs. Dory Funk Jr. matches
00:58:34I've seen Paul Jones
00:58:36go an hour with Harley Race
00:58:38in Charlotte
00:58:40I've seen Cary Von Erick
00:58:42and Ric Flair battle for an hour in Hawaii
00:58:44and this is
00:58:46what this match reminds me of
00:58:48all power slam
00:58:50cover
00:58:52oh not quite enough
00:58:54and look at Joe
00:58:56he's going for that arm
00:58:58if he locks in the cross arm breaker
00:59:00CM Punk will have to submit
00:59:02and Punk keeps grabbing his hand
00:59:04he's got his hands clasped together
00:59:06Joe can't get that cross arm breaker
00:59:08but Joe is trying to pull
00:59:10trying to tear at the arm of CM Punk
00:59:12even though he doesn't
00:59:14and he rolls through with it
00:59:16and gets to the ropes
00:59:18great counter move
00:59:20and that's one more move
00:59:22that Samoa Joe thought he had this match won
00:59:24and yet once again
00:59:26CM Punk survived
00:59:28and again the frustration level continues
00:59:30and you've got to talk about
00:59:32the conditioning of both of these athletes
00:59:34you brought it up before
00:59:36how Samoa Joe usually gets his matches
00:59:38his wins in under 15 minutes
00:59:40I talked to Jack Brisco one time
00:59:42he said that he wrestled
00:59:44an hour draw
00:59:46with Dory Funk
00:59:48and he said that before the match
00:59:50he stepped on a scale that was in the dressing room
00:59:52after the match he lost 10 pounds
00:59:54both men
00:59:56definitely losing weight in this one
00:59:58who's got more stamina
01:00:00oh Punk cover
01:00:04oh that could have been it
01:00:06it only takes 3 seconds
01:00:08Joe cuts off Punk though
01:00:10scoops Punk up
01:00:12powerbomb
01:00:14cover
01:00:16and he turns it over to that crab
01:00:18and Punk is nowhere near the ropes
01:00:20this has got to be it right here
01:00:22this has got to be it right here
01:00:24CM Punk nowhere to go
01:00:26all the pressure on his back
01:00:28and knees
01:00:30and he turns it into an STF
01:00:32a favor to Samoa Joe
01:00:36and Punk is so far away from those ropes
01:00:38his best bet might be to try to go backwards
01:00:40if he's even able to
01:00:42oh he's not going anywhere
01:00:44as this move tears at the knee
01:00:46and twists the neck and torso
01:00:48and there it is
01:00:50what great presence by CM Punk
01:00:54how did he carry
01:00:56270 pounds
01:00:58really with one leg
01:01:00one leg that he could move
01:01:02flown without one leg
01:01:04with 270 pounds on his back
01:01:06while having his neck and knee wrenched
01:01:08let's go Joe
01:01:10let's go Joe
01:01:12let's go Joe
01:01:14let's go Joe
01:01:16let's go Joe
01:01:18and this crowd hasn't lost a beat
01:01:20as now Joe trying to take Punk out of the corner
01:01:22unable to
01:01:24once again Punk returning home
01:01:26to the corner
01:01:28and look at Joe
01:01:30he's too tired to follow up
01:01:32and Punk's too tired to take advantage
01:01:34oh Punk lands on his feet
01:01:36and connects with a boot
01:01:38to the face of Joe
01:01:42that was to CM Punk's desperation
01:01:44movement
01:01:46now CM Punk
01:01:48quickly following up on his advantage
01:01:50I don't know how much gas there's left in CM Punk's tank
01:01:52but he's trying to get to his destination
01:01:54before he runs out of fuel
01:01:56and if he connects with this
01:01:58Punakurana scores
01:02:00the champion's down
01:02:02cover
01:02:04didn't get the leg hooked
01:02:14I think right now
01:02:16both CM Punk and Samoa Joe
01:02:18are feeding off this crowd's energy
01:02:20I don't know if they have much of their own
01:02:22you've got pride, you've got guts
01:02:24crowd intensity feeding
01:02:26and you have the ROH
01:02:28world championship on the line
01:02:30that's what both men are going for
01:02:32Joe made that belt a world title
01:02:34he's brought prestige to it
01:02:36CM Punk wants to be the top dog
01:02:38here at ROH
01:02:40and you need the belt to prove it
01:02:42Punk now has Joe
01:02:44mule kick
01:02:46Punk takes Joe
01:02:48and scores
01:02:50that's a Sam Punk original move
01:02:52cover
01:02:56barely gets that foot over the bottom rope
01:03:00I bet if either one of these athletes
01:03:02took their boot off and turned it upside down
01:03:04you would see
01:03:06probably a cup of water pour out of the boot
01:03:08they've lost so much fluid
01:03:10so many fluids
01:03:12this is so exhausting to do what they're doing
01:03:14at this level, at this intensity
01:03:16for as long as they've gone
01:03:18this is the kind of match you only see
01:03:20from the true best
01:03:22the true elite, those that are truly
01:03:24driven for success
01:03:26and they're doing it for the ROH world title
01:03:28Punk maybe going for a lariat
01:03:32and he gets dunked
01:03:34Joe saved himself
01:03:36and Joe is trying to get an adrenaline burst
01:03:38he's fired himself up
01:03:40flip cover
01:03:42turns it into that rolling cradle
01:03:46cover
01:03:50the move that Danny Hodge
01:03:52won so many world junior heavyweight championships with
01:03:54the Oklahoma roll
01:03:58but again
01:04:00that roll, that move
01:04:02not only gets your opponent dizzy
01:04:04but it affects your equilibrium as well
01:04:06as you see Joe there trying to get his bearings
01:04:08let's go Punk
01:04:10let's go Punk
01:04:12let's go Punk
01:04:14let's go Punk
01:04:16let's go Punk
01:04:18let's go Punk
01:04:20Joe trying to lariat, Punk ducks it
01:04:22Joe connects with that elbow, goes for a lariat again
01:04:24no, Punk that was a crucifix
01:04:26cover
01:04:28oh
01:04:30just a second away from a champ
01:04:36Mark, that's going to be it for CM Punk
01:04:38he decapitates
01:04:40what a brilliant effort by CM Punk
01:04:42you've got to give him so much credit
01:04:44for taking the battle with a champion
01:04:46to the absolute limit
01:04:48no
01:04:50how is CM Punk kicking out
01:04:52after that lariat
01:04:54oh my god
01:04:56this is a legendary effort
01:04:58from both men
01:05:00CM Punk, I'm speechless
01:05:02how did he do it
01:05:04both men down and exhausted
01:05:06both men
01:05:08trying to figure out what they have to do
01:05:10to put their opponent away
01:05:12let's go Punk
01:05:14let's go Punk
01:05:16they have to be getting
01:05:18all their energy from the crowd at this point
01:05:20as look at Punk
01:05:22trying to pull himself up with the ropes
01:05:24Joe using the ropes to hold himself up
01:05:26both weary fighters
01:05:28oh
01:05:30Joe unleashes that chop
01:05:32he's going for a dragon suplex
01:05:34Punk blocks it, Punk now behind Joe
01:05:36Joe no reverses on Punk
01:05:40Joe going for the rolling reverse
01:05:42CM Punk continues to block it
01:05:44now CM Punk
01:05:46with back elbows, big forearm
01:05:48puts him over Joe to one knee
01:05:50it's all over
01:05:52he gets the cover
01:05:54here it is, new champion
01:05:56rolls the shoulder
01:05:58at two
01:06:06how is Joe doing it
01:06:08this is what made this match
01:06:10such a legendary champion
01:06:12Joe is cementing the legacy
01:06:14of his ROH world title reign
01:06:16right here tonight in Dayton
01:06:18and CM Punk is
01:06:20cementing his legacy as well
01:06:22by taking Samoa Joe to the absolute
01:06:24limit of his considerable ability
01:06:26but CM Punk needs that
01:06:28world title to truly cement his
01:06:30legacy and he might be one move
01:06:32away from getting it
01:06:34any follow up on the weary and worn
01:06:36down world champion
01:06:38I don't know how either one of these men
01:06:40can still stand
01:06:44oh Joe ducks
01:06:46Punk missing, oh a low blow
01:06:48a low blow
01:06:50that's desperation on CM Punk
01:06:52and Joe clutches Punk though
01:06:54slams a knee first on the canvas
01:06:58and I think we're about the 45-50
01:07:00minute mark in this match
01:07:02and Joe has Punk
01:07:04once again focusing on that knee of CM Punk
01:07:06and driving that knee into the spine
01:07:08of CM Punk
01:07:10Punk might tap out if he can't reach the ropes
01:07:12half crab
01:07:14but look at Joe wrenching back
01:07:16and Punk reaches up and grabs the ropes
01:07:20half crab, a favorite
01:07:22of the great Lufez
01:07:24the fans chanting please don't tap at CM Punk
01:07:26I'm shocked to hear it
01:07:28we haven't heard that since the beloved Paul London
01:07:30here at ROH
01:07:32CM Punk earning the respect of these fans
01:07:34and now Joe
01:07:36uh oh, muscle buster time
01:07:38Joe has him set up
01:07:40this puts everyone down
01:07:42oh Punk
01:07:44avoids it
01:07:48Joe now staggered
01:07:50using those ropes to hold himself off
01:07:52as Punk goes up to the top
01:07:54Joe slams Punk
01:07:56knocks Punk down
01:07:58Joe now climbing up to the top
01:08:00he's one big move away
01:08:02from winning this match
01:08:04that could be the superplex right here
01:08:06if he connects, Joe's going for it
01:08:08CM Punk
01:08:10hold on
01:08:12Pepsi plunge
01:08:14he's got him hooked
01:08:16oh
01:08:30Punk connects with the Pepsi plunge
01:08:32but that's all it
01:08:34pumped on Punk's knees too
01:08:36the already injured knees of CM Punk
01:08:38and he could not make the cover
01:08:40he was in so much pain
01:08:42that he rolled out of the ring
01:08:44those knees are in terrible shape
01:08:46and as a result
01:08:48CM Punk could not capitalize
01:08:50the world champion is down
01:08:52he landed with so much force
01:08:54with Samoa Joe
01:08:56at 270 pounds
01:08:58the momentum took him to the apron
01:09:00where he rolled out of the ring himself
01:09:04and there is under 5 minutes left
01:09:06in the 60 minute time limit
01:09:08of this match
01:09:10both men
01:09:12both men
01:09:14have used every move in their arsenal
01:09:16plus some
01:09:18now they've got to figure out
01:09:20one pinning combination
01:09:22Punk could still get the pin though
01:09:24he could still get the pin
01:09:26Joe started making his way to his feet
01:09:28too much time elapsed after the Pepsi plunge
01:09:32Punk now firing with those forearms
01:09:36goes in
01:09:38no ducks
01:09:40double clothesline
01:09:42both men down
01:09:44I haven't seen a match go an hour
01:09:46since the Ric Flair-Ricky Steamboat Series
01:09:48in the 90s
01:10:00I believe there is under 3 minutes left
01:10:02in this time limit of this match
01:10:04right now the clock is in Samoa Joe's favor
01:10:06the challenger needs to capitalize
01:10:08as in the event of a draw
01:10:10the world champion retains the title
01:10:12Punk needs to get aggressive
01:10:14in a hurry if he's still able to
01:10:16does he have the intestinal fortitude
01:10:18does he have the guts
01:10:20does he have what it takes to be a world champion
01:10:22does he have the presence of mind
01:10:26Shining Wizard again
01:10:28Punk up
01:10:30takes Joe into the middle of the ring
01:10:32follows up with a vertical suplex
01:10:34and Joe
01:10:36saves himself with a dragon screw
01:10:38deferential move by Joe
01:10:40but effective on the injured
01:10:42Nia CM Punk
01:10:44and he created some distance
01:10:46between himself and CM Punk
01:10:48which is what he needed
01:10:50giving him a chance
01:10:52to regain consciousness
01:10:56I believe the timekeeper
01:10:58I can't hear over this crowd
01:11:00he either just called 2 minutes remaining
01:11:02or 1 minute remaining
01:11:10let's see if Punk
01:11:12can follow up, no Joe
01:11:14right now Joe just needs to kill a couple of minutes
01:11:16and he's still world champion
01:11:18I don't think he's trying to kill a couple of minutes
01:11:20this is Samoa Joe, he will be aggressive
01:11:22to the very end
01:11:28and what's Joe setting up for here
01:11:30looks like he's trying to grab
01:11:32a 3 quarter Nelson and suplex him
01:11:34off the top rope
01:11:36oh he dumps Punk backwards
01:11:38on the back of his neck
01:11:40a new move from Samoa Joe
01:11:44let's see if he can follow up to get the pin
01:11:46no
01:11:50both men can be counted out here
01:11:52before the time limit even elapses
01:11:56this is just incredible
01:11:58I've been thinking of all the hour time
01:12:00and the draws I've seen
01:12:02and this ranks up there with it
01:12:04it's not over yet though Mark
01:12:06we still have under a minute to go here
01:12:08and neither man can get the pin in that time
01:12:10as they are slapping each other
01:12:12I saw Ricky Steamboat win a match
01:12:14over Ric Flair at 59 minutes
01:12:16and it could happen right here
01:12:18we are under a minute, maybe about 30 seconds
01:12:20left as both men are slapping each other
01:12:22and Punk scores
01:12:24with a DDT
01:12:26but does he have the energy
01:12:28to get the pin
01:12:30oh he collapses before he can get the pin
01:12:36the clock is ticking
01:12:38this match is almost over
01:12:40and there it is
01:12:44Joe saves the title
01:12:50and that's it
01:12:52the 60 minutes have expired
01:12:56incredible
01:12:58an absolutely incredible display
01:13:00of wrestling ability
01:13:02of athleticism
01:13:04of endurance and most of all of courage
01:13:06what a world title match
01:13:08we just saw
01:13:10the ring of honor world title means it all
01:13:12CM Punk and Samoa Joe
01:13:14an unbelievable effort from both men
01:13:16and I am so proud
01:13:18that we had this match in an ROH ring
01:13:20this was history
01:13:22this was something special
01:13:24I'm glad we could all share it
01:13:26wow, all I have to say is thank you
