NASCAR Sr. VP of Competition Elton Sawyer comments on penalties to the Nos. 1, 3 and 23 cars after the final laps at Martinsville Speedway.
Transcript
00:00We took and looked at the most recent penalty that we had written for an infraction very similar,
00:06which was the 41 car a couple years ago at the Roval. We felt like that we wanted to ramp this
00:13one up, and we did. We did that in a way that we included team leadership in this one, something
00:22that we feel like that, you know, we want to get our point across that it's a responsibility of all
00:29of us, the team owners, the team leadership, as well as ourselves here at NASCAR, to uphold the
00:36integrity of our sport, our racing, to make sure that when our fans show up on a given day and
00:43watch a race, that they're seeing the best competition possible and there's nothing in
00:48there that's manipulating that. So we do feel like that this is the right path at this time.
00:55We will make sure going forward, if we need to, we will ramp it up again. We will include drivers.
01:01We will include OEs going forward, if we need to. We will get this point across. We discussed
01:08all the above. The group that we landed on, as well as the drivers, we felt like that
01:15in this case, we felt like we wanted to focus more on the team leadership, something that we
01:21haven't done in the past, but I promise you that does not exclude going forward. And we have
01:28meetings coming up this week with our drivers and we will get that point across to them and be very
01:34clear that when you do anything that's going to compromise the integrity of our sport, we are
01:40going to react. And we'll look at, you know, all of our racing, as we normally do in the off-season,
01:46if there's any tweaks or changes that need to be made, we will make them as well.
