President Obama has arrived in Berlin, his first visit to the German capital since his election in 2008. The visit falls in the same month that John F. Kennedy delivered his famous "Ich bin ein Berliner" speech a half century ago.In his speech he announced a new disarmament initiative.
n his speech he held out the prospect of reducing the number of "deployed strategic nuclear weapons by up to one third",while ensuring the security of the United States and its allies and maintaining a "strong and credible strategic deterrent". He said reductions in US and Russian tactical weapons would be sought. He said that the United States would hold a summit on nuclear security in 2016 and added that he would "work to build support in the United States to ratify the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty". Foreign Minister Westerwelle said that Germany supported this "bold step forward".
