New Zealand approves same sex marriage

The New Zealand parliament erupted in song Thursday after members voted overwhelmingly in favor of a bill to allow same sex marriage.

Before the bill was passed, one parliamentarian described some of the more obscure arguments he'd heard against the bill.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) NATIONAL PARTY MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT, MAURICE WILLIAMSON SAYING (OVERLAID WITH SHOTLIST #11):

"One of the messages that I had was that this bill was the cause of our drought. This bill was the cause of our drought. Well if any of you follow my twitter account, you will see that in the Pakuranga electorate this morning, it was pouring with rain, we had the most enormous big gay rainbow across my electorate."

For residents watching the vote, the news was met with cheers of approval.
