AYLA SCANLAN - WISH I WAS
PRESENTED BY RACHEL FORSYTH
Seventeen year old Ayla Scanlan had been living in the same house-on-a-hill in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland all her life, until last year. For her, the last quarter of 2012 was in Sydney's Newtown as a full-time musician.
Amongst the mountains and fresh air, Ayla was writing original songs at a very young age prompting her parents to by her a tape recorder when she was five. She now has over 80 original songs explaining that, "Like so many other songwriters, writing is how I express myself." Her sound has been likened to that of other singer/songwriters including Norah Jones, Joni Mitchell, Sarah Blasko, Tori Amos and others such as Birdy, Julia Stone and Missy Higgins. Crawling with people and culture, the last three months spent in Sydney's Newtown have opened the young singers eyes to a different way of life (great for writing lyrics).
However Ayla is back on the Sunshine Coast in 2013 to study a dual diploma of music at the Sunshine Coast TAFE. Ayla believes, "The Sunshine Coast is bursting with talented people and though Sydney was a phenomenal experience, I don't think there's a better place to be than right here." Ayla has recently home-recorded a second EP with Angus Price. With so many original songs her goals for this year include getting down more recordings as well as making one or more professional music videos. This songwriter has performed at many venues and functions including weddings, photography exhibitions, cafés and Taverns. Last year Ayla also taught beginner guitar and voice. "Music should be shared," she explains "with an audience and with anyone who wants to learn."
In 2013 Ayla will be spending as much time on music as possible - when she is not enjoying the wonderful Sunshine Coast beaches that is. "I have never focused completely on music before, but this year that is what I want to do. I want to study, teach and perform music. I want to spend my spare time getting better and better because music to be my 'thing' and I want to be good at it."
