Service Allows Texts Using License Plate Number

A new service allows drivers to send text messages via license plate numbers.

You've just parked your car. And you notice another car in the lot has an issue like a running alarm or an open trunk? What do you do?

A new clever service called CurbTXT allows motorists in San Francisco to register their license plate number into an online database, so other drivers can alert them if there is an issue.

Say a vehicle’s lights are left on, a blinker is going nonstop on a moving car, or an automobile is blocking a driveway – you can simply send the text to the license plate number along with a message alerting the other car owner of the problem.

The direct form of communication is one-way and anonymous so there is no way to reply or know who sent the message. It's assumed that people are altruistic and want to help other people.

In some scenarios, however you want hide your license plate.

Last year, a product prototype called the 'noPhoto' blocked photos by traffic cameras. Described as a smart digital license plate frame, "The noPhoto precisely times and fires the flash at the exact moment needed to overexpose the traffic camera.”
