A 17-foot Burmese python is shot in the Everglades.

The Everglades are a great place to visit but can sometimes be dangerous as well.. Recently, a vacationing family was surprised to see a massive, 17-foot Burmese python creep across the Everglades picnic area.

A park ranger arrived on the scene and killed the creature with a shotgun. The park official was able to confirm it was indeed a Burmese python.

The incident comes just before Florida’s Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission hosts the 2013 Python Challenge.

$1,500 will be paid to the person who kills the most pythons while $1,000 will go to whoever kills the longest python. The Everglades are home to an increasing population of pythons.

Earlier this year, a giant python was captured. The Burmese python measured more than 17 feet and weighed nearly 165 pounds.

Researches discovered another surprise: the creature was carrying 87 eggs. The snakes pose a major problem in the Everglades, as they serve as a threat to native wildlife.
