Bilawal is also one of the ten thaats (parent scales) of the Indo-Pakistani classical music, it brought great fame and recognition to S.D. Burman, the composer, and Geeta Roy, the singer.
The only deviation S.D. makes from the fixed Bilawal notes is when, in order to beautify his composition he uses tivar Madham in the part “zamana beet gaya”. The meendh from Re to Pa in beet gaya, meet gaya, sangeet gaya etc., is the main feature of this composition.
Burman has used violins, cello and flute and the song was rendered perhaps from saatwan sufaid. The taal is Keharwa.
S.D. was born in the royal family of Tripura state in North-East India and had his training in classical music under his father, sitarist and dhrupad singer Nabadwipchandra Dev Burman. In the 1930s S.D. Burman was known as a popular singer of folk and light classical songs. He moved to Bombay in 1944.
