Grannies Hired By Chinese Government to Watch for Protests

Grannies have been hired by the Chinese government to help quel protests.

The Chinese government has tightened security to prevent protests aimed at the change of leadership that happens every ten years in the ruling Communist Party.

But it’s not only soldiers and police in the streets.

There are also guards with fire extinguishers to put out the flames from Tibetan monks igniting their own bodies in protest of Chinese rule in Tibet.

And old retired women have volunteered for security duty.

Around 1 point 4 million security volunteers are working during the party congress, and many are little old ladies, who are given wind breakers and arm bands that let others know their status.

They are there to report suspicious activity that may be related to a protest of the government change or other political issues.

The security measures aren’t only in the streets.

Internet use has been censored in China in the past, but recently, even sites like Google and their email service Gmail have been blocked.

What do you think about the Chinese government's approach to minimizing opposing voices?
